3-Day Tanzania Safari - Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara

Overview

This 3-day lodge safari adds a third park to the classic 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro combination: Lake Manyara National Park, a compact but surprisingly diverse park known for its lush groundwater forest, large troops of baboons, flamingos along the lake shore, and the tree-climbing lions that have made it famous. Combined with Tarangire's elephant herds and baobabs and the Ngorongoro Crater's concentrated Big Five wildlife, this itinerary gives a well-rounded introduction to Northern Tanzania's parks without venturing as far as the Serengeti.

The extra day over our 2-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari means a more relaxed pace, with two nights based in the Karatu area rather than a single overnight, and a dedicated day for Lake Manyara on the return leg toward Arusha. Travelers who want to add the Serengeti itself should look at our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari, which covers the same three parks plus a night inside the Serengeti.

Tour Highlights

  • Three of Northern Tanzania's strongest parks in three days: Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara
  • Tarangire's large elephant herds and ancient baobab woodlands
  • Full crater floor game drive at Ngorongoro, with strong black rhino sighting chances
  • Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions, flamingos and groundwater forest
  • Private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide throughout
  • 2 nights at a lodge or tented camp in the Karatu area, all meals included

Morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for the drive to Tarangire National Park, known for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and rich wildlife along the Tarangire River. Day 2

Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive

The crater floor hosts lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo, with flamingos around the soda lake and one of the highest chances in Tanzania of spotting the endangered black rhino. After a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, you ascend the rim road and return to your lodge in Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Lake Manyara National Park – End of Safari

After a game drive through the park, you exit in the afternoon and continue to Arusha or Moshi, or transfer to the airport as arranged.

Distance: Approx. 1.5-2 hours from Karatu to Lake Manyara, then 1.5-2 hours back to Arusha

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 3-day safari?

This is a vehicle-based safari, no fitness threshold applies and no walking is required. Game drives are conducted from a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof, giving everyone a clear view and space to stand for photographs. Travellers with limited mobility are accommodated, let us know in advance and we'll select lodges with step-free access and brief your guide on any specific needs.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

June to October is the dry season, when wildlife concentrates around water sources and Tarangire's elephant herds are at their largest. January and February offer warm, dry weather and good general game viewing with fewer crowds. The long rains in April and May can affect road conditions, particularly around Lake Manyara, but bring lush green scenery and the lowest rates of the year. The Ngorongoro Crater is productive year-round thanks to its enclosed ecosystem.

What animals will we likely see?

In Tarangire, expect large elephant herds, giraffe, zebra, buffalo and a wide range of birdlife around the baobabs and river. In the Ngorongoro Crater, lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo are routine, with one of Tanzania's most reliable chances of spotting black rhino. Lake Manyara is known for its tree-climbing lions (sightings are not guaranteed but the behaviour is well documented in this park), large baboon troops, and flamingos along the lake shore when water levels are right. Leopard is possible in any of the three parks but elusive.

What's included in the price?

The price covers a private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide, all park entry and conservation fees including the Ngorongoro Crater service fee, two nights' accommodation in the Karatu area with the meals specified, and drinking water throughout. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Is 3 days enough, or should I add the Serengeti?

Three days gives you a genuinely well-rounded Northern Circuit experience across three distinct parks without the longer drives required to reach the Serengeti. If you have a fourth day available, our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari follows a similar route with an added night inside the Serengeti itself, which significantly increases predator sighting opportunities. This 3-day format works well as a standalone trip or as an add-on before or after a Kilimanjaro climb or Zanzibar stay.

Is this safari suitable for families with children?

Yes, the moderate pace and full-board lodge accommodation make this a comfortable option for families. Most lodges in the Karatu area offer family rooms or interconnecting tents, and the shorter daily drives compared with longer Serengeti-inclusive itineraries are easier for younger children. Let us know ages in advance so we can select accommodation and pace the game drives accordingly.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base can dispatch a replacement, all three parks on this itinerary sit on the same road corridor between Arusha and Karatu. All vehicles carry a means of emergency communication, and lodges have radio or phone contact with our operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from all three parks, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
