5-Day Katavi National Park Tanzania Safari

Overview

Katavi National Park is Tanzania's third-largest national park and one of its most remote, a truncated arm of the Rift Valley in the southwest where the Katuma River and its seasonal floodplains support some of the densest game concentrations in the country. During the dry season, an estimated 4,000 elephants and herds of over 1,000 buffalo converge on the shrinking waterholes, drawing lion prides and spotted hyena clans that follow the easy pickings of giraffe, zebra, impala and reedbuck.

This 5-day fly-in itinerary departs from Arusha, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar by shared charter flight, giving three full days inside the park for game drives, optional walking safaris and birdwatching among Katavi's 400-plus recorded bird species. Travelers with only a day or two to spare should look at our 2-Day Katavi National Park Tanzania Safari instead, which covers the park from Mpanda Town by road.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 5-day safari?

This is mostly a vehicle-based safari. The optional morning walking safaris on Days 2 and 4 are at a gentle, guide-led pace, you can substitute a vehicle game drive instead if you'd rather skip walking. Travellers with limited mobility are accommodated, let us know in advance.

When is the best time to visit Katavi National Park?

The dry season, roughly June to October, is the strongest time to visit. As the Katuma River and seasonal lakes shrink to a shallow trickle, wildlife concentrates in huge numbers around the remaining water, the spectacle this park is known for. In the wet season, the floodplains attract large numbers of hippo, crocodile and water birds instead, a different but still rewarding experience.

What animals will we likely see?

Katavi is known for some of Tanzania's largest elephant gatherings, with herds running into the thousands in the dry season, alongside buffalo herds of 1,000-plus, lion, spotted hyena, giraffe, zebra, impala, reedbuck and the localized eland, sable and roan antelope. Hippo and crocodile are abundant in the floodplains and seasonal lakes. No operator can guarantee specific sightings.

What's included in the price?

The price covers game viewing inside Katavi National Park, park entrance fees, full-board accommodation while on safari, a professional driver-guide, and the transfer to the Mpanda airport or bus terminal at the end of your stay. The shared charter flights to and from Katavi, international and domestic flights elsewhere, and travel insurance are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Where does the shared charter flight depart from?

Flights to Katavi (via Mpanda airport) typically depart from Arusha, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, depending on where the rest of your trip is based. Let us know your starting point and dates and we'll confirm the current shared charter schedule and price.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at major airports. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Malaria prophylactics are recommended for this part of Tanzania. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended given how remote this park is.
