7-Day Uganda Gorillas, Golden Monkeys & Chimps Tracking

Overview

This 7-day trip is built around Uganda’s three signature primate experiences: gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, golden monkey trekking in the volcanic forests of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park. Uganda is a country of striking contrasts, tangled jungle, the snow-capped "Mountains of the Moon," roaring rapids, vast lakes and terraced hillsides, and this route brings you through several of its most distinctive landscapes.

Tour Highlights

  • Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with a full hour guaranteed once a group is located
  • A community walk near Bwindi for a closer look at local culture
  • Golden monkey trekking in the volcanic forests of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, plus a choice of the Crater Lakes hike or Bigodi Swamp walk
  • Three distinct primate species in one well-paced week

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 7-day trip?

Gorilla, golden monkey and chimpanzee trekking all involve walking on uneven, sometimes steep forest terrain, with the gorilla trek in particular able to take anywhere from one to several hours depending on where the group is found. Reasonable fitness, sturdy closed shoes and trekking poles (available locally) are recommended.

What's the difference between gorilla, golden monkey and chimpanzee trekking?

Each targets a different primate in a different forest: gorilla trekking in Bwindi searches for mountain gorilla family groups, golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga searches for troops of these brightly coloured, energetic monkeys in bamboo forest, and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale searches for one of East Africa's largest wild chimpanzee populations. All three involve a guided walk followed by up to an hour observing the primates once located.

How are the permits handled?

One gorilla permit and one chimpanzee permit per person, both at non-resident rates, are included in the tour price. Golden monkey trekking permits are included as part of the Mgahinga park fees. All permits are booked well in advance, since daily numbers are limited.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

Trekking is possible year-round, but the two dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, offer easier trail conditions across all three parks. The wetter months can mean muddier treks but fewer visitors on the trails.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, one gorilla permit and one chimpanzee permit per person, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labelled as optional, all taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfers, and the meals and drinking water specified in the day-by-day itinerary. International flights, additional accommodation before or after the tour, tips and personal items such as souvenirs, travel insurance and visa fees are not included.

Can the volcano hikes at Mgahinga be added to this itinerary?

Yes, Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga and Mount Muhavura can all be climbed from Mgahinga, though each requires a full extra day and isn't part of the standard 7-day route. Let us know if you'd like to add a summit hike to your trip.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Uganda tourist visa online before travel, and a regional East Africa visa covering Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda is also available. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended given the remote forest terrain involved in trekking.
