Mawe Ninga Tented Camp โ Authentic Maasai-Hosted Safari on Tarangire's Kopjes
Mawe Ninga Tented Camp (also known as Maweninga Camp) sits on a dramatic granite kopje on the western side of Tarangire National Park, with some tents perched directly between enormous boulders that form the camp's natural architecture. The camp is locally owned, operated by MKSC โ the oldest safari company of its type in Tanzania โ and largely hosted by authentic Maasai warriors. The Maasai guides and camp staff are not performing a cultural role for tourist consumption; this is their land, their workplace, and their knowledge is firsthand and deep.
Mawe Ninga is an unfenced camp in a wildlife area: elephant, lion, and other large animals pass through. This is stated transparently โ guests are always escorted after dark, and the camp requires basic wildlife awareness when moving between tents. For travellers who want to feel genuinely inside Africa rather than behind a fence, the trade-off is acceptable. For those who need a fenced perimeter, it is not the right camp.
Location
The western side of Tarangire National Park is less visited than the main Tarangire River corridor accessed through the main entrance gate, and the remote location gives game drives a genuinely private character. The camp overlooks Lake Burungi (a soda lake) with Lake Manyara visible in the far background. The surrounding kopje landscape is excellent for cheetah, leopard, kori bustard and other kopje-associated species.
Accommodation
Sixteen tented rooms on raised wooden decks, some dramatically positioned between the granite boulders of the kopje. Each tent has a private balcony, bedroom, and bathroom/dressing room area with en-suite facilities and 24-hour water. Interiors maintain individual character while sharing a common natural aesthetic. The camp's central area includes a lounge, two restaurants and a fire pit where evenings are spent swapping safari stories.
Activities
Game drives into Tarangire National Park for elephant herds, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe and baobab landscapes. Atmospheric sundowners at the lodge fire pit on the kopje. Cultural interaction with the Maasai camp hosts.
Who Is Mawe Ninga Best For?
Mawe Ninga is for travellers on a genuine budget who want authentic Maasai hospitality, a dramatic kopje setting inside Tarangire, and game drives without the crowds of the main entrance corridor. It is also used as an "end of safari" camp โ spending the final nights on safari in an unfenced, genuinely wild setting after more polished lodges earlier in the circuit has an emotional resonance that guests consistently mention.

Mawe Ninga is the most authentic budget option in Tarangire. The kopje setting with some tents built directly into the boulders, the Maasai-hosted atmosphere, the unfenced wildlife reality and the western park corridor's seclusion make it a genuinely different experience from the main-gate Tarangire lodges. Not for guests wanting polished facilities or a shower with strong pressure โ the jug-and-basin bathroom arrangement is basic. For independent travellers and those ending a safari with something genuinely wild, it is memorable in the right way.โ The SafariBando team
