Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Mpumalanga

Africa's second-largest canyon — the green Lowveld escarpment route between Johannesburg and Kruger

Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Mpumalanga

Quick facts

Wildlife

The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve holds hippo and crocodile in the Blyde River below the canyon walls. Vervet monkey, baboon, klipspringer and leopard inhabit the canyon scrub and forest. The reserve is excellent for raptors including martial eagle, crowned eagle and various vultures riding the thermal columns above the escarpment edge. Over 350 bird species recorded. The reserve connects ecologically with the lowveld below, with elephant occasionally entering the lower canyon sections.

Top activities

Three Rondavels viewpoint — the canyon's most photographed spot: three cylindrical dolomite columns rising above the blue water of the Blyderivierspoort Dam. Bourke's Luck Potholes — extraordinary water-carved cylindrical holes where the Blyde and Treur Rivers meet, polished into smooth red rock sculptures. God's Window — the most dramatic escarpment edge viewpoint, with views 1,000 metres down to the Lowveld. Panorama Route self-drive — connecting all viewpoints along the R532. Hippo viewing from the Blyde Dam bridge. Hiking trails in the reserve. Photography from the escarpment edge at sunrise.

About Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Mpumalanga

Most visitors to South Africa drive past Blyde River Canyon without understanding what they’re looking at. The R532 Panorama Route on the Mpumalanga escarpment — the scenic alternative to the highway between Johannesburg and Kruger — passes the edge of Africa’s second-largest canyon and the world’s largest “green canyon” (the walls are forested rather than bare rock). The viewpoints are extraordinary and most are accessible within a few hundred metres of the road.

The Blyde River Canyon (officially renamed Motlatse Canyon) is 26 km long, 800 metres deep and floored by the Blyderivierspoort Dam — a reservoir whose blue water reflects the three cylindrical dolomite columns of the Three Rondavels in photographs that have become one of South Africa’s most replicated images.

Where is it?

The Panorama Route runs along the R532 between Graskop and Hoedspruit in Mpumalanga Province, on the eastern escarpment of the Drakensberg above the Lowveld. From Johannesburg: 4 hours on the N4/R540. From Kruger (Orpen Gate): 1.5 hours west. The Panorama Route is a natural 1-day stop between Johannesburg and Kruger on any SA road trip.

The key viewpoints

God’s Window

The highest viewpoint on the Panorama Route: a 1,730-metre lookout where the Drakensberg escarpment drops 1,000 metres to the Lowveld below. On a clear day the view extends 100 km to the Mozambique border. A short forest trail leads to a secondary viewpoint through indigenous cloud forest. The name is entirely warranted.

Bourke’s Luck Potholes

Where the Blyde and Treur rivers meet, millennia of swirling water have carved the red-and-yellow dolomite bedrock into extraordinary cylindrical potholes — smooth-walled wells up to 6 metres deep, perfectly circular, polished to a smooth finish. The bridge and walkway system over the confluence makes these very accessible; the geological formations are some of the most distinctive in southern Africa.

Three Rondavels (Rondavels Viewpoint)

The canyon’s most photographed spot: three isolated dolomite columns rising from the canyon floor, their flat tops covered in vegetation and their cylindrical shapes resembling the thatched rondavel huts of traditional South African architecture. The viewpoint looks directly across the canyon to the columns with the blue dam water below. Sunrise and late afternoon light are the best photography windows.

Lisbon and Berlin Falls

Two waterfalls on the plateau above the canyon, most spectacular in the summer rainy season. Lisbon Falls (94 metres) is the tallest accessible waterfall in Mpumalanga.

Combine Blyde River Canyon with…

  • Kruger National Park — 1.5 hours east; the canyon is the natural scenic stop on any Kruger road trip.
  • Graskop Gorge Lift — a glass-sided gondola descending into the gorge below Graskop town.
  • Pilgrim’s Rest Historic Village — a preserved 19th-century gold rush town on the R533.

Frequently asked questions about Blyde River Canyon

How long does the Panorama Route take?

A comfortable half-day covers the main viewpoints (God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck, Three Rondavels) with time for stops and photos. A full day adds the waterfalls, Pilgrim’s Rest and the Graskop Gorge.

Is it possible to hike in the canyon?

Yes — the Blyde River Hiking Trail (3–5 days) follows the canyon floor from Bourke’s Luck to God’s Window. Day hikes are available from the Blyde Dam area. Book through Mpumalanga Tourism Authority.

Best time to visit Blyde River Canyon

April to September — Dry season (clearest views)

The dry season gives the clearest visibility down into the canyon and across the Lowveld below. The escarpment viewpoints at God’s Window and the Three Rondavels are at their most dramatic in the sharp dry-season light. The Panorama Route road is in its best condition. Winter mornings sometimes bring a mist layer that fills the canyon — beautiful from above if you time the visit for the period when it begins to lift around 09:00.

November to March — Summer (lush, waterfalls at full volume)

The summer rains transform the canyon walls to vivid green. Waterfalls that barely trickle in the dry season run at full volume, most spectacularly at Lisbon and Berlin Falls nearby. The humidity is high but the landscape is at its most dramatically coloured.

Bottom line: April to September for clear panoramic views. November to March for green canyon walls and full waterfalls. A sunrise visit to God’s Window in any season is worth setting an early alarm.
