Frequently asked questions

Why is Zanzibar called the Spice Island?

Zanzibar became one of the world’s largest producers of cloves during the 19th century under Omani Sultan rule, and the island’s spice trade with Arabia, Persia and India long before that gave it the nickname that has stuck ever since.

What spices will I see on the tour?

Clove, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper, cardamom, lemongrass and turmeric are commonly grown on the plantations visited, alongside tropical fruit such as jackfruit, breadfruit and starfruit depending on season.

What is Kidichi Persian Bath?

A 19th-century bathhouse built in 1850 by Sultan Said bin Sultan for his wife Sheherazade, granddaughter of a Persian shah, reflecting the strong Persian architectural influence brought to Zanzibar through trade and rule during that period.

Is lunch included on this tour?
