Tandala Tented Camp — Ruaha's Waterhole Camp Where Elephants Come at Night
Tandala Tented Camp is an owner-run camp near the Mdweka Sand River, 5km from Ruaha National Park's main gate. Named after the greater and lesser kudu — the majestic antelopes that frequent the surrounding area — the camp offers one of Ruaha's most intimate wildlife-at-camp experiences. The signature feature is Tent #9, which has a small private waterhole just metres away: "next to our tent there is a small waterhole only a few meters away where every night the elephants come to drink." The larger main waterhole is visible from the restaurant.
Tents are elevated on stilts with leather seating in the main area, a pool and Maasai guards who patrol the unfenced perimeter with "stealth-like precision" — a noted safety feature that enables the open camp design. Camp manager John is specifically praised for "making sure everyone has exactly what they need." Food is "excellent." The camp is outside Ruaha NP but 5km from the main gate, so park fees apply only on entry for game activities.
