2-Day Chemka Hot Springs Camping Trip from Moshi

Overview

This 2-day, 1-night version of our Chemka Hot Springs Day Trip turns a half-day swim into a relaxed overnight under the trees. Chemka (also known as Kikuletwa) Springs sits around 40km from Moshi, a clear, deep natural pool of cool, spring-fed water (despite the name, it isn't geothermally heated) shaded by giant fig trees, reaching depths of up to 10 metres in places while staying clear enough to see the bottom throughout. Camping on the shore means you get a full afternoon and evening at the springs rather than a single rushed visit, with time for a campfire after dark and a second swim the next morning before heading back.

This trip suits travelers who want more time at the springs than a single day allows, or who simply enjoy camping as part of the experience. If you'd rather keep it to a single day, our Chemka Hot Springs Day Trip covers the same destination without the overnight stay.

Tour Highlights

  • A full afternoon, evening and following morning at Chemka (Kikuletwa) Springs, rather than a single rushed visit
  • Natural turquoise spring-fed pools, the water is naturally cool, not geothermally heated despite the name
  • Camping right on the shore, with a campfire in the evening
  • A walk around Kikuletwa village on the second day
  • Shared transport included, a more budget-friendly format for travelers happy to share a vehicle
  • Swimming both on arrival and again the next morning before the return drive

Frequently asked questions

Is the water at Chemka actually hot?

No, despite the name, the water at Chemka (Kikuletwa) Springs is naturally cool and refreshing, not geothermally heated. It's clear, spring-fed water with a striking turquoise colour, kept at a fairly constant, pleasant swimming temperature year-round by underground sources, more like a cool natural pool than a hot spring in the geothermal sense.

What is camping at Chemka like, and is it safe?

Camping is set up on the shore of the springs under tree cover, with dome tents provided as part of the trip. The area is well used by visitors and tour operators, and as with any campsite in a natural setting, it's sensible not to wander alone after dark. Bring a torch and stay close to the group after sunset.

Do we need to bring our own food?

Yes, meals are not included on this trip, you'll need to bring your own food and snacks for both days, or arrange this with us in advance if you'd like meals added to your booking. Drinking water is provided.

How fit do I need to be for this trip?

This is a low-effort trip, there's no hiking beyond the short village walk on Day 2, which is gentle and suitable for most fitness levels. Swimming is entirely optional, though the pools do reach depths of up to 10 metres in places, so non-swimmers should stick to the shallower edges.

What's included in the price?

The price covers all camping equipment for both days, drinking water, shared transport to and from Moshi, and the camping fee. Meals, swimming costumes, tips, and personal items are not included. This trip runs on a shared transport basis, a more budget-friendly format than a fully private booking, ask us about private transport if you'd prefer not to share a vehicle.

How does this compare to the day-trip version?

The destination and core activity, swimming at Chemka Springs, are identical. This 2-day version adds an overnight stay camping on the shore, giving you a full afternoon, evening and following morning at the springs rather than a single visit, plus a short walk around Kikuletwa village on Day 2. If you'd rather not camp, the single-day version covers the same springs without the overnight stay.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Yes, though families with younger or non-swimming children should supervise closely given the pool's depth in places. Camping and the campfire evening tend to be a highlight for children who enjoy the outdoors.

What should I bring?

Swimwear and a towel, sun protection, insect repellent, your own food and snacks for both days, a sleeping bag if you have one (or ask us about rental), and a torch for after dark. A small dry bag for phones or cameras near the water is also useful.
