Chemka Hot Springs Day Trip from Moshi

Overview

Chemka Springs, also known locally as Kikuletwa Springs, sits around 2 hours' drive from Moshi on the plains below Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. Despite the name "hot springs", the water here isn't geothermally heated, it's naturally cool, clear, spring-fed water with a striking turquoise colour, fed by underground sources that keep it at a refreshing temperature year-round. The pools are shaded by giant fig trees whose roots reach down into the water, creating a genuinely beautiful spot for swimming and relaxing away from the heat of the plains.

This is a low-key, unstructured day: there's no fixed itinerary beyond getting you there, setting up a picnic with a table and chairs, and bringing you back, you're free to swim, float, read or simply relax for as long as you like. Travelers with more time can ask about overnight camping at the springs for an even more relaxed pace. This trip pairs well with our Materuni Waterfalls and Coffee Tour as a second easy half-day excursion from Moshi, or as a rest-day activity before or after a Kilimanjaro climb.

Day 1

Chemka (Kikuletwa) Springs

After a morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi, it's roughly a 2-hour drive to Chemka Springs. On arrival, your driver-guide sets up a table and chairs at the springs for your picnic lunch, then the rest of the time is yours, swim in the clear turquoise pools beneath the fig trees, relax in the shade, or simply enjoy the quiet of the surrounding bush (keep an eye out for baboons in the trees above). When you're ready, your driver-guide brings you back to Moshi. For travelers with more time, overnight camping at the springs can be arranged in advance, ask us about extending this into an overnight trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is the water at Chemka actually hot?

No, despite the name, the water at Chemka (Kikuletwa) Springs is naturally cool and refreshing, not geothermally heated. It's clear, spring-fed water with a beautiful turquoise colour, fed by underground sources that keep it at a fairly constant, pleasant swimming temperature year-round, more like a cool natural pool than a hot spring in the geothermal sense. The name comes from local usage rather than the water's actual temperature.

How fit do I need to be for this trip?

This is one of our least physically demanding trips, there's no walking beyond getting from the vehicle to the springs themselves, just a short distance over natural ground. Swimming is entirely optional. The main consideration for some visitors is the roughly 2-hour drive each way, which is on a mix of paved and unpaved roads.

What's the best time of year for this trip?

Chemka Springs are a year-round destination, the water temperature stays fairly constant regardless of season since it's spring-fed rather than weather-dependent. The main seasonal consideration is the drive itself, the rainy seasons (April-May and shorter rains in November) can make the unpaved sections of the access road slower and occasionally affect accessibility after heavy rain, we'll advise if conditions are a concern when you book.

What's included in the price?

The price covers private transport from your hotel in Moshi and back, access/village fees for the springs, a driver-guide, a packed lunch, 1.5 litres of drinking water per person, and a table and chairs set up at the springs for your picnic. Personal spending money and tips for your driver-guide are not included. Overnight camping, if you'd like to extend the trip, is arranged separately. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Is this a good activity before or after a Kilimanjaro climb?

Yes, this is one of the most popular rest-day choices for climbers, a genuinely relaxing, low-effort day with the chance to swim and unwind, which many people particularly appreciate after a week on the mountain. The roughly 2-hour drive each way means it works best as a full day rather than squeezed in alongside other plans.

Is this trip suitable for families with children, and is it safe to swim?

Yes, families are welcome, and children often love the springs. The pools vary in depth, some areas are shallow near the edges and deeper toward the middle, so younger or non-swimming children should be supervised closely. There are no lifeguards on site, swimming is at your own risk, as is typical for natural swimming spots in Tanzania. Bring appropriate swimwear and consider water shoes for getting in and out over natural rock and root surfaces.

What should I bring?

Swimwear and a towel, sun protection (there's open sky as well as shaded areas), insect repellent, a change of clothes for the journey back, and a small dry bag for phones or cameras if you plan to be in and around the water. We provide lunch, water, and a table and chairs.

How does overnight camping at Chemka work?

For travelers who want more time at the springs, overnight camping can be arranged with advance notice, you'd bring or rent camping equipment (we can advise or arrange this), and our team would handle transport, a campsite area near the springs, and provisions. This turns the trip into a more relaxed two-day experience rather than a single long round trip. Let us know at the time of booking if you'd like to explore this option, as it needs to be arranged ahead of time.
