2-Day Tanzania Camping Safari - Tarangire & Ngorongoro

Overview

This 2-day camping safari covers the same route as our 2-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari, Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, at a lower price point by swapping lodge accommodation for a public campsite near Karatu. You'll sleep in a dome tent on a proper camp bed, with all meals cooked by our crew, while still getting the same private 4x4, driver-guide and park access as the lodge version.

Camping safaris suit travelers who want to put more of their budget toward extra days or a longer itinerary rather than accommodation upgrades, and many people simply enjoy the closer connection to the bush that a tented camp brings. If comfort matters more than budget, our 2-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the identical route with lodge or tented-camp accommodation instead.

Tour Highlights

  • Full game drive in Tarangire National Park, famous for its large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees
  • Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the best chances in Tanzania to spot the endangered black rhino
  • Budget-friendly format, same parks and game drives as our lodge safari at a lower price
  • Dome tent with proper camp bed, all meals cooked by our safari crew
  • Private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide
  • Public campsite in the Karatu area with shared ablution facilities

Frequently asked questions

What is camping like on this safari, is it safe?

You'll stay at an established public campsite with a perimeter fence or boundary, shared ablution blocks with toilets and showers, and a dedicated area for our mess tent and cooking. Dome tents are set up before you arrive and taken down by our crew, you just bring your sleeping bag (or rent one from us) and personal items. Campsites in this area are well used by safari operators and are not isolated, security is part of the campsite arrangement, though as with any campsite in wildlife areas, you're asked not to walk around alone after dark and to use a torch and call our crew if you need to.

How fit do I need to be for this 2-day safari?

This is a vehicle-based safari, no fitness threshold applies and no walking is required for the game drives. The only physical consideration is camping itself, getting in and out of a tent, and using shared ablution facilities a short walk from your tent. Travellers with limited mobility should let us know in advance, as camping may not suit everyone, our 2-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the identical route with step-free lodge accommodation.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

June to October is the dry season, when animals concentrate around water sources and Tarangire's elephant herds are at their largest, and camping is most comfortable with dry ground and cooler nights. January and February offer warm, dry weather and good general game viewing with fewer crowds. The long rains in April and May can make campsites muddier and are generally less comfortable for camping, though rates are at their lowest. The Ngorongoro Crater is productive year-round.

What's included in the price?

The price covers a private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide, all park entry and conservation fees including the Ngorongoro Crater service fee, camping equipment (dome tent, camp bed, mess tent, camp chairs and table), a safari cook and all meals as specified, campsite fees, and drinking water throughout. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, sleeping bag rental, alcoholic drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

How does this compare to the lodge version of this safari?

The route, game drives, park fees, vehicle and guide are identical to our 2-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari. The only difference is where you sleep, a dome tent at a public campsite on this itinerary versus a lodge or tented camp on the lodge version, and the price reflects that difference. If you're undecided, consider that camping puts you closer to the sounds of the bush at night, while the lodge version offers en-suite rooms and more creature comforts after a long game-drive day.

Is this safari suitable for families with children?

Camping safaris work well for families who enjoy the outdoors and don't mind shared facilities, many children love the experience of sleeping in a tent on safari. For families who'd prefer en-suite rooms, particularly with very young children, our 2-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the same route with lodge accommodation. Let us know ages in advance so we can advise on what's realistic.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles, camping equipment and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base can dispatch a replacement quickly given the short distances on this route. All vehicles carry a means of emergency communication, and campsites have phone or radio contact with our operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from both Tarangire and Ngorongoro, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
