3-Day Nyerere National Park Safari from Dar es Salaam

Overview

Nyerere National Park is Africa's largest national park, established in 2019 from the bulk of the former Selous Game Reserve and named in honour of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the founder of the Tanzanian nation. At over 30,000 square kilometres, it's a genuine wilderness with relatively undisturbed ecological processes and a strong predator-prey balance, elephant, buffalo and lion are found in significant numbers, and the park holds one of the last true strongholds for the African wild dog.

The mighty Rufiji River runs through the park on its way to the Indian Ocean, supporting large hippo and crocodile populations and offering one of Tanzania's only riverboat safari experiences alongside the usual game drives. This 3-day trip from Dar es Salaam packs in a boat safari, a full day of game driving, and a walking safari, three genuinely different ways to experience the park in a short window. If you'd like to continue south to Mikumi National Park as well, our 5-Day Selous and Mikumi Safari combines both.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same place as the Selous Game Reserve?

Nyerere National Park was established in 2019 from the majority of what was previously the Selous Game Reserve, so the landscape, wildlife and lodges you'll experience are largely the same area travelers may know by the older name. The new name honours Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the founder of the Tanzanian nation.

How fit do I need to be for this trip?

The boat safari and game drives require no particular fitness, you'll be seated throughout. The Day 3 walking safari is a gentler, slower-paced activity accompanied by an armed ranger, typically suitable for most reasonably active travelers, though it does involve walking across uneven terrain for a couple of hours.

When is the best time of year to visit?

The dry season (June to October) offers the most concentrated wildlife viewing as animals gather near the Rufiji River and remaining water sources, and is generally considered the better window for this trip. The wetter months bring lush scenery and strong birdlife but can make some roads more difficult.

What's included in the price?

The price covers 2 nights of accommodation, all wildlife reserve or park entry fees, bottled drinking water during the safari, daily game drives, daily meals as per the itinerary, the riverboat safari and the walking safari, a professional safari guide, and transport in a 4WD vehicle with a pop-up roof. Airfare, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at lodges, optional activities and treatments, personal expenses, tips, travel insurance, and visa and passport fees are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What animals are we likely to see?

Elephant, buffalo and lion are found in significant numbers, and the park is one of the last true strongholds for the African wild dog. Hippo and crocodile are easily seen along the Rufiji River, and giraffe, zebra and a wide range of antelope species round out the game drives, alongside over 440 recorded bird species.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Yes, though the early starts and the walking safari may suit older children better than very young ones. The boat safari in particular tends to be a highlight for children, given the close-up views of hippo and crocodile from the water.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando coordinates this trip from our ground network covering the southern circuit. If a vehicle has an issue, our team can arrange a replacement, and all vehicles carry a means of emergency communication. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from Nyerere National Park, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
