5-Day Tanzania Safari - Nyerere (Selous) & Mikumi

Overview

This 5-day camping safari from Dar es Salaam combines two of Southern Tanzania's standout parks: 2 days at Nyerere National Park (formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve), including a riverboat safari on the Rufiji River, and 3 days at Mikumi National Park, known for its flood plain scenery and strong predator sightings. Both can be reached directly from Dar es Salaam airport or any lodge in the city, making this a natural option for travelers flying into the southern circuit rather than the north.

This itinerary uses camping accommodation throughout, a more budget-friendly format that still includes daily game drives, a boat safari, a walking safari and a Maasai village visit along the way. If you'd prefer a shorter introduction to Nyerere alone, our 3-Day Nyerere National Park Safari covers the riverboat safari and game drives in fewer days.

Tour Highlights

  • A riverboat safari on the Rufiji River, admiring hippos and crocodiles in their natural habitat
  • A guided walking safari with armed rangers for a closer, ground-level perspective
  • 3 full days of game driving across Mikumi's flood plain and mountain-bordered scenery
  • Strong sightings of elephant, buffalo and wild dog at Nyerere
  • Lion, eland, hartebeest and hippo all commonly seen at Mikumi
  • A Maasai village visit near Mikumi before the return drive to Dar es Salaam

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this safari?

Most of this trip is vehicle-based and requires no particular fitness. The Day 3 walking safari is a gentler, ranger-led activity lasting around two hours, suitable for most reasonably active travelers, though it does involve walking across uneven terrain.

What's the camping like on this trip?

Accommodation is camping throughout, just outside the Nyerere National Park gate for the first two nights and near Mikumi National Park for the following two. This is a more budget-friendly format than lodge-based safaris while still including full daily activities, meals and a professional guide.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

The dry season (June to October) offers the most concentrated wildlife viewing in both parks, as animals gather near remaining water sources, including the Rufiji River. The wetter months bring lush scenery and strong birdlife but some roads can be more difficult to navigate.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, all activities unless labeled optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labeled optional, all taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfer, meals as specified in the day-by-day itinerary, and drinks. International flights, additional accommodation before or after the tour, tips, personal items (souvenirs, travel insurance, visa fees), and government-imposed tax or park fee increases are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What animals are we likely to see across both parks?

At Nyerere, expect elephant, buffalo, wild dog, lion, giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu, hippo and crocodile along the river. At Mikumi, the flood plain supports lion, eland, hartebeest, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, hippo and elephant. Both parks also offer strong birdlife throughout.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Yes, though the camping format and early starts may suit families comfortable with a more rustic style of travel better than those wanting hotel-level comfort. The boat safari and walking safari both tend to be highlights for children.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando coordinates this trip from our ground network covering the southern circuit. If a vehicle has an issue, our team can arrange a replacement, and all vehicles carry a means of emergency communication. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from both Nyerere and Mikumi, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
