3-Day Serengeti Safari - Wildebeest Migration from Arusha

Overview

For travelers short on time who still want a genuine Serengeti experience, this 3-day safari spends the entire trip inside Serengeti National Park rather than splitting time across multiple parks. The Serengeti is the largest part of the Serengeti-Masai Mara ecosystem, home to the Great Wildebeest Migration but also rich in resident wildlife year-round, the Big Five (including black rhino, recently reintroduced to the park), strong predator density, and a wide range of birdlife.

Two full days inside the park gives meaningfully more game-driving time than a multi-park itinerary squeezed into the same number of days. If you'd like to add Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater to the same trip, our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers all three parks in one extra day.

Tour Highlights

  • Two full days dedicated entirely to game drives inside the Serengeti
  • Black rhino sightings possible, reintroduced to the park and part of a genuine Big Five experience
  • Strong predator density: lion, leopard and cheetah are all realistic sightings
  • Optional sunrise game drive available on request
  • Drive via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Maasai Steppe, scenic en-route game viewing
  • A focused, single-park trip for travelers short on time

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this safari?

No fitness requirement applies, this is a vehicle-based safari in a private 4x4, with no walking involved beyond getting in and out of the vehicle at picnic stops.

Is the wildebeest migration guaranteed on this trip?

No sighting can be guaranteed, the migration moves through different parts of the Serengeti-Masai Mara ecosystem depending on the month, and your guide will track recent movements and position you as well as possible given the time of year. The Serengeti is rewarding wildlife viewing year-round even outside the migration's peak months in your specific area.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

June to October is the dry season, with wildlife concentrated around water sources and generally the most reliable game viewing. January and February is the southern Serengeti calving season, with large predator concentrations as they follow the herds. The migration's exact location varies year to year and by month, ask us for current positioning when planning your dates.

What's included in the price?

The price covers a private 4x4 safari vehicle, professional English-speaking guide, all Serengeti National Park entry and conservation fees, accommodation as listed for 2 nights, and all meals as specified in the itinerary. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What animals are we likely to see?

Lion, leopard and cheetah are all realistic sightings given the Serengeti's strong predator density, and black rhino is possible following reintroduction to the park. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and a wide range of antelope and birdlife are routine. Wildebeest and migration-related sightings depend on the season and where the herds currently are.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Yes, the relatively focused single-park structure makes for a simpler trip to plan around than a multi-park itinerary, with two full days of game viewing giving plenty of time to spot wildlife at a relaxed pace.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base can dispatch a replacement. All vehicles carry a means of emergency communication, and lodges have radio or phone contact with the operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from the Serengeti, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
