Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Tarangire National Park

Pickup from your hotel at 8am for the drive to Tarangire, famous for its diverse landscape spanning nine different vegetation zones. The park is particularly known for its abundance of ancient baobab trees, the largest trees on the continent, dwarfing the animals beneath them. The river running through the park supports a huge range of wildlife, birds, lions, leopards, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, antelope and, of course, elephants, Tarangire holds the largest concentration of elephants in the country, giving a rare chance to observe interactions between elephant families. Lunch is taken at a fascinating observatory site with sweeping views over the river and its wildlife, often with a good chance of watching a hunt unfold. The afternoon continues with a further game drive before heading to your accommodation.

Distance: Full day of game driving, plus the drive from Arusha

Activity: Full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park

Day 2

An early morning pickup for a full day of game driving in Lake Manyara. Though small (around 205 square miles), the park boasts breathtaking scenery, lush acacia forest, giant fig and mahogany trees, and a growing population of baboon and blue monkey. Giraffe, elephant, impala and large numbers of buffalo are permanent residents, alongside a substantial hippo population in the lake itself. The park is also known for its tree-climbing lions and flamingos along the lake shore, a landscape that's hard to capture in words, with stunning photo opportunities throughout. Optional extras like a bike tour or boat excursion can be arranged. In the afternoon, you'll transfer to Ngorongoro for the night.

Day 3

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is considered one of the wonders of the natural world, spreading across 102 square miles with walls up to 2,000 feet high, almost a natural ark holding nearly every species indigenous to East Africa. It's one of the very few places on the continent where you can spot the black rhino, and supports the greatest concentration of African wildlife found anywhere. The crater holds a river, several swamps, a soda lake drawing large flamingo numbers, forest and open plains, and is also known for its elephants, among the largest in the world with huge tusks. Starting early, you'll descend to the crater floor for an incredible morning of wildlife viewing in one of the most stunning places on Earth, followed by a fantastic afternoon game drive before ascending and exiting the conservation area toward Arusha, typically arriving back around 5pm, though timing is flexible if you have a flight to catch.
