4-Day Akagera National Park Safari, Rwanda

Overview

Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda is the only savannah national park in the country and home to a remarkable wildlife recovery story. Following the reintroduction of lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, the park now supports all members of the Big Five alongside elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, Nile crocodiles, and over 500 bird species across its diverse habitats of savannah, wetland, and woodland. This 4-day itinerary begins with a community experience and a Lake Ihema boat safari, adds a sunrise hot air balloon flight on Day 2, a full-day game drive on Day 3, and concludes in Kigali with a visit to Fazenda Sengha Recreation Centre before departure.

Before entering the park, a community experience with local residents provides an introduction to traditional Rwandan culture including basket weaving, banana beer production, and cultural dances. After checking in at your lodge, the afternoon concludes with a sunset boat safari on Lake Ihema — a tranquil cruise across one of East Africa's most productive bird and wildlife lakes, where hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a wide variety of waterbirds are reliably encountered.

Frequently asked questions

Does Akagera have the full Big Five?

Yes. Lions were reintroduced to Akagera in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, completing the Big Five alongside elephants, leopards, and buffalo. The populations are growing and both species are regularly seen, though sightings are not guaranteed for any individual visit.

Is the hot air balloon safari included?

Yes. The sunrise hot air balloon safari on Day 2 is included in the package price.

What is the Lake Ihema boat safari like?

Lake Ihema is one of Rwanda's most important wetland habitats. The sunset boat safari typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours and offers close encounters with hippo pods, Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, and a rich variety of waterbirds including the African fish eagle, malachite kingfisher, and various herons.

What is Fazenda Sengha?

Fazenda Sengha is a recreation centre located on Mount Kigali, the highest hill in the city. It offers panoramic views of Kigali and a range of optional activities including horse riding, quad biking, archery, and ziplining. It is a pleasant and distinctive way to spend a final afternoon before an evening departure flight.

What does the price include?

Transportation in a pop-up roof safari vehicle, full-board accommodation throughout, all park entrance fees, all included activities (boat safari, balloon, game drives, community experience, Fazenda Sengha), onboard snacks and soft drinks, and all taxes. International flights and visa fees are excluded.

Is a visa required for Rwanda?

Most nationalities can enter Rwanda visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival. East African Community citizens have free entry. Please check the latest requirements for your nationality before travel.

What is the best time to visit Akagera?

Akagera can be visited year-round. The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer the best game viewing as wildlife concentrates around water sources and vegetation is lower. The wet season brings lush greenery and excellent birding.

Can this be combined with gorilla trekking?

Yes. Rwanda's compact size makes it easy to combine Akagera with Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking, typically over 5-7 days. Contact us to discuss a combined Rwanda itinerary.
