Join a guided hike through the dense forest of Nyungwe National Park to track chimpanzees, a phenomenal wildlife experience on par with gorilla trekking. The trek is exciting but can be challenging, since the chimps are highly mobile and constantly on the move through the canopy. During your time in the park, you also have the opportunity to cross the canopy walkway, a 200-metre bridge suspended between giant trees 50 metres above the forest floor, offering incredible views of the upper canopy and excellent chances of spotting primates, birds and butterflies that live in the treetops. Day 6

Gorilla Trekking

After an early breakfast, head to Kinigi, at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains in Volcanoes National Park, to begin the trek. Your guide and tracker lead you deep into the forest in search of your allocated gorilla family, a trek that can last anywhere from 30 minutes to eight hours depending on the family’s exact location that day. Once you find them, you have up to one magical hour quietly observing the gorillas, likely just a few metres away, going about their daily lives, feeding and interacting under the watchful gaze of the silverback. In the late afternoon, transfer back to your accommodation to reflect on the experience. Accommodation upgrades are available at an extra cost.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for chimpanzee and gorilla trekking?

Both treks involve walking on uneven, sometimes steep forest terrain. Chimpanzee trekking can be physically demanding since the chimps move quickly through the canopy, and gorilla trekking can take anywhere from 30 minutes to eight hours depending on the family's location that day. Reasonable fitness and sturdy closed shoes are recommended.

How are gorilla and chimpanzee permits handled?

One gorilla permit and one chimpanzee permit per person, both at non-resident rates, are included in the tour price and booked well in advance, since daily permit numbers are limited at both parks.

Is tipping expected in Rwanda?

No tip is expected on this itinerary; this is the standard convention for our Rwanda tours and differs from the discretionary tipping guideline used on many of our Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya safaris.

When is the best time of year for this trip?

The dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, offer easier trekking conditions in both Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park. The wetter months bring lush scenery and fewer visitors, though trails can be muddier.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, one gorilla permit and one chimpanzee permit per person, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labelled as optional, all taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfers, and the meals specified in the day-by-day itinerary. International flights, accommodation upgrades, drinks, some meals as specified, additional accommodation before or after the tour, and personal items such as souvenirs, travel insurance and visa fees are not included.

Can this itinerary be combined with a Uganda or Tanzania extension?

Yes. Rwanda connects easily by air or road to both Uganda and the Tanzania safari circuits, so this itinerary can be extended with further gorilla or chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, or a safari extension in northern Tanzania. Let us know if you'd like this built into your trip.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Rwanda tourist visa online before travel, and a regional East Africa visa covering Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya is also available. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended given the remote forest terrain involved in trekking.
