2-Day Akagera National Park Wildlife Safari, Rwanda

Overview

This 2-day safari offers a compact introduction to Akagera National Park — Rwanda's only savannah national park, covering 1,122 square kilometres in the east of the country along the Tanzania border. Following the reintroduction of lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, Akagera now supports all members of the Big Five alongside elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species. Day 1 combines a game drive and a boat trip on Lake Ihema; Day 2 is a full-day game drive before the return to Kigali.

For a longer Akagera experience with a balloon safari, see our 4-day Akagera safari. To combine Akagera with gorilla trekking, explore our Rwanda safari packages.

Frequently asked questions

Does Akagera have the Big Five?

Yes. Lions were reintroduced in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, completing the Big Five alongside elephants, leopards, and buffalo. Both reintroduced species are reproducing and their populations are growing, though sightings are not guaranteed on any individual visit.

What is the Lake Ihema boat safari like?

Lake Ihema is the largest lake in Akagera and one of Rwanda's most important wetland habitats. The boat safari offers close encounters with hippos, Nile crocodiles, waterbirds including the African fish eagle and various kingfishers, and buffalo and elephant along the shoreline.

What does the price include?

All park entrance fees and concession fees, 1 night half-board accommodation, a professional driver-guide, all transportation in a 4x4 vehicle, the Lake Ihema boat trip, coffee, soft drinks, snacks, and drinking water throughout, and all government taxes.

Is a visa required for Rwanda?

Most nationalities can enter Rwanda visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival. East African Community citizens have free entry. Check the latest requirements for your nationality before travel.

What is the best time to visit Akagera?

Akagera can be visited year-round. The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) are generally best for game viewing as wildlife concentrates around water and vegetation is lower.

How far is Akagera from Kigali?

Akagera National Park is approximately 2.5 hours' drive from Kigali, making it easily accessible as a short safari from the capital.

Can this be extended to include gorilla trekking?

Yes. Rwanda's compact size makes it easy to combine Akagera with Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking. Contact us to discuss combined itineraries.

What accommodation options are available?

Akagera offers a range of accommodation from luxury tented camps to mid-range lodges and budget campsites, all located within or adjacent to the park. Please specify your preferred category when booking.
