4-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari - Northern Circuit

Overview

Taking in the very best of Tanzania's Northern Circuit, this 4-day safari visits two of the country's most iconic destinations, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with its jaw-dropping volcanic crater. Every safari is different, that's the real beauty of it, but you'll certainly witness some of the planet's best wildlife in its stunning natural environments.

This itinerary builds in a full day of discovery inside the Serengeti, giving real depth to your time in the park rather than a single rushed visit. If you're tighter on time, our 3-Day Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari covers the same two destinations in a more condensed format.

Tour Highlights

  • A full day of discovery in the Central Serengeti, where bushland meets grassland
  • A full day descending into the Ngorongoro Crater, with a chance of spotting black rhino
  • An estimated 30,000 animals on the crater floor, supported by year-round water and fodder
  • Cheetah, leopard and lion all genuine possibilities in the Serengeti's bushland-grassland zone
  • Lodge and tented camp accommodation throughout
  • All park fees, government VAT and Serengeti concession fees included

Distance: Airport transfer to Karatu

Activity: Arrival and transfer to your hotel or lodge

Accommodation: Hotel or lodge in Karatu

Day 1

Karatu to Serengeti

The roughly seven-hour journey westward takes you toward the Serengeti, your eyes opened to the colours and character of Tanzania along the way, perhaps a glimpse of Maasai herdsmen driving their flocks of goats to new pastures. You'll get to know your driver-guide on the drive, often surprisingly knowledgeable on whatever you ask. After the long journey, you'll stop for lunch before an afternoon game drive.

Distance: Approx. 7 hours' drive, plus afternoon game drive

Activity: Drive to the Serengeti, afternoon game drive

Accommodation: Luxury tented camp inside the Serengeti

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

Full Day of Discovery in the Serengeti

Exploring from your accommodation in the Central Serengeti, where wildlife is abundant enough that you may feel it's come to find you rather than the other way around. The exact highlight of the day is impossible to predict, the animals don't publish their schedule, but this area is where bushland meets grassland, a favorite spot for big cats hunting prey. Cheetah, leopard and lion are all genuine possibilities today.

Distance: Full day of game driving

Activity: Full-day game drive in the Central Serengeti

Accommodation: Luxury tented camp inside the Serengeti (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater & Return to Arusha

After breakfast, you'll descend into the crater for a game drive across the floor. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most densely populated wildlife areas in the world, home to an estimated 30,000 animals including some of Tanzania's last remaining black rhino. Supported by a year-round water supply and fodder, the crater holds herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and giant African elephants, alongside a substantial predator population, lion, hyena, jackal, cheetah and the ever-elusive leopard. A picnic lunch is enjoyed on the crater floor before the late afternoon drive back to Arusha.

Distance: Crater floor game drive, then drive back to Arusha

Activity: Full Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive, then return to Arusha

Accommodation: N/A, end of safari

Frequently asked questions

Why does this itinerary include a full day of discovery in the Serengeti?

This trip is built to give genuine depth to your Serengeti experience rather than a quick pass-through, the full day on Day 2 lets you explore further into the park and follow up on sightings, rather than rushing straight on to Ngorongoro the next morning.

How fit do I need to be for this safari?

No fitness requirement applies, this is a vehicle-based safari throughout, with no walking required beyond getting in and out of the vehicle at picnic and viewing stops.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

June to October is the dry season, with wildlife concentrated around water sources and generally the most reliable game viewing in both parks. January and February is the southern Serengeti calving season, with strong predator activity. The Ngorongoro Crater is productive year-round regardless of season.

What's included in the price?

The price covers 3 nights of lodge or tented accommodation, transport and game viewing in a modified 4x4 Land Cruiser with photographic roof hatch, services of a professional, experienced English-speaking driver-guide, all park fees and game drives as per the itinerary, mineral water per person during game drives, all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner during the safari), government VAT and Serengeti concession fees, and airport transfer. Personal items, hotel accommodation before and after the safari (available at extra cost), domestic and international flight tickets, gratuities, travel insurance, and drinks and beverages at lodges or camps are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What animals are we likely to see?

The Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the densest wildlife concentrations on Earth, including a strong chance of spotting black rhino, alongside elephant, buffalo, hippo, lion, hyena and jackal. The Serengeti's Central area is rich in resident wildlife year-round, with cheetah, leopard and lion all realistic sightings.

How does this compare to the 3-day version?

Both itineraries cover the same two destinations, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, but this 4-day version adds a full extra day of game driving inside the Serengeti, giving more time to track wildlife and explore the park before moving on to Ngorongoro.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base can dispatch a replacement. All vehicles carry a means of emergency communication, and lodges have radio or phone contact with the operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
