6-Day Western Corridor Safari - Tarangire, Grumeti & Ngorongoro Crater

Overview

This 6-day safari combines the reliable year-round wildlife of Tarangire National Park with the less-visited Western Corridor of the Serengeti National Park — the narrow western extension defined by the Grumeti River and its seasonal migration crossings. Two days in the Grumeti area give sustained time in one of the Serengeti's most exclusive and least-trafficked regions before moving to the central Seronera plains and concluding with a full descent into the Ngorongoro Crater.

For a 5-day version starting in central Serengeti before heading west, see our 5-day western corridor safari. For a northern migration focus with Mara River crossings, see our 6-day north migration safari.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport your guide meets you and transfers you to your hotel in Arusha. After check-in, the evening is free for relaxation followed by a briefing on the safari ahead.

Distance: Airport transfer to Arusha hotel

Activity: Transfer and safari briefing

Accommodation: Hotel or lodge in Arusha

Meals: Half Board

Day 2

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, depart Arusha and drive to Tarangire National Park. The park is well known for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees, and the Tarangire River — the only permanent water source in the park — draws exceptional concentrations of wildlife year-round. A full-day game drive with a picnic lunch gives sustained time to observe elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and over 500 bird species.

Distance: Approximately 120 km from Arusha to Tarangire

Activity: Full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park with picnic lunch

Accommodation: Lodge or camp near Karatu

Meals: Full Board

Day 3

Karatu to Western Serengeti — Grumeti Area

After breakfast, continue towards the Western Corridor of Serengeti National Park. The Grumeti area is defined by the Grumeti River, which winds through riverine forest and open plains before emptying into Lake Victoria. This region is famous for its seasonal migration crossings — wildebeest and zebra crossing the Grumeti between May and July — alongside large Nile crocodiles, hippos, and the riverine-adapted wildlife of the western plains. An afternoon game drive gives the first taste of this quieter, more exclusive part of the Serengeti.

Distance: Approximately 250 km from Karatu to western Serengeti, around 5-6 hours

Activity: Afternoon game drive in the western Serengeti Grumeti area

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in western Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 4

Full Day in the Western Serengeti

A full day exploring the Western Corridor. The Grumeti River area offers a more exclusive safari experience — fewer vehicles, uninterrupted wildlife encounters, and a different landscape from the central and northern Serengeti. The western corridor supports elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and large cat populations alongside wildebeest and zebra herds that concentrate here during migration. A picnic lunch is served at a scenic spot in the bush.

Distance: Game drives within the western Serengeti Grumeti area

Activity: Full-day game drives with picnic lunch in the bush

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in western Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 5

Western Serengeti to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, drive east toward the central Serengeti. The route passes through open plains, acacia woodland, and rocky kopjes before reaching the Seronera area — one of the most wildlife-rich zones in the entire park. An afternoon game drive in the central Serengeti introduces the resident lion prides, leopards in the acacia trees, and the year-round concentration of plains game that makes Seronera consistently productive.

Distance: Approximately 100 km from western to central Serengeti, around 2-3 hours

Activity: En route game drive; afternoon game drive in central Serengeti

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in central Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 6

Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro — Morning Game Drive

After breakfast, a morning game drive in the central Serengeti gives further time in the Seronera area before departing for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You arrive at the crater rim in the afternoon for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approximately 145 km from central Serengeti to Ngorongoro rim

Activity: Morning Serengeti game drive; afternoon transfer to Ngorongoro

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp on the Ngorongoro crater rim

Meals: Full Board

Day 7

Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive — Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive with a picnic lunch at the hippo pool. The crater floor supports one of Africa's highest wildlife densities — elephants, lions, buffalo, hippos, flamingos, and the rare black rhino are all regularly encountered. After the drive you ascend and return to Arusha.

Distance: Approximately 200 km from Ngorongoro to Arusha

Activity: Ngorongoro Crater game drive with picnic lunch; return to Arusha

Accommodation: N/A – return to Arusha

Meals: Half Board

Frequently asked questions

What is the Western Corridor of the Serengeti?

The Western Corridor is the narrow western extension of Serengeti National Park that reaches toward Lake Victoria. It is defined by the Grumeti River — the western equivalent of the Mara River — and is home to large Nile crocodiles, hippos, and riverine forest alongside the open plains. The seasonal migration passes through here between May and July, though the Western Corridor supports excellent resident wildlife year-round.

How does this safari differ from the standard northern circuit?

The standard northern circuit typically follows Tarangire → Serengeti (central) → Ngorongoro. This itinerary substitutes two central Serengeti days for two days in the Western Corridor, giving access to a less-visited, more exclusive part of the Serengeti and the Grumeti River ecosystem before rejoining the central plains.

What is the best time of year for the Grumeti area?

The Western Corridor is excellent year-round for resident wildlife. The seasonal migration passes through between May and July, when wildebeest cross the Grumeti River — an event similar to the more famous Mara River crossings but typically with fewer visitors. Large Nile crocodiles in the Grumeti are a year-round highlight.

What wildlife can I expect?

Tarangire is outstanding for elephants and baobab landscapes. The western Serengeti Grumeti area offers hippos, crocodiles, lions, leopards, and migration herds in season. The central Seronera area delivers year-round Big Five sightings. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's best locations for the rare black rhino.

What does the price include?

All park fees, crater service fee, full-board accommodation throughout, a professional driver-guide, 4x4 safari vehicle, all game drives, drinking water, and airport transfers. International flights and visa fees are not included.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes. Extra nights in the western Serengeti or additional parks can be arranged. Contact us to discuss options.

Is this suitable for first-time safari visitors?

Yes, though the Western Corridor is particularly rewarding for travellers who have already visited the central Serengeti and want a different experience.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa, available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival. Yellow fever documentation may be required.

What is the accommodation like in the Western Corridor?

The western Serengeti has fewer camps than the central or northern areas, which contributes to its exclusive feel. Options range from permanent tented camps to more remote mobile camps in migration season. Please specify your preferred category at booking.
