7-Day Western Corridor Safari - Tarangire, Grumeti, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Overview

This 7-day safari gives the most thorough western corridor experience in the series — three consecutive days in the Grumeti area of western Serengeti National Park after an opening day in Tarangire National Park. The western corridor's riverine forests, open plains, and seasonal Grumeti River crossings (May to July) offer a distinctive alternative to the central and northern circuit, with fewer vehicles and exceptional resident wildlife. The safari concludes with central Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

For a 6-day western corridor version, see our 6-day western corridor safari. For a 5-day version, see our 5-day western corridor safari.

Day 2

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, the drive heads to Tarangire National Park. The park is known for its impressive elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. A morning game drive traverses open grasslands, seasonal wetlands, and the Tarangire River, supporting giraffes, zebras, buffalo, diverse antelope species, and over 500 bird species. A picnic lunch is served within the park.

Distance: Approximately 120 km from Arusha to Tarangire

Accommodation: Lodge or camp near Karatu

Meals: Full Board

Day 3

Karatu to Western Serengeti — Grumeti Area

After breakfast, depart for the western corridor of Serengeti National Park. The Grumeti area is known for its rich biodiversity — a mix of riverine forests, open grasslands, and seasonal migration routes. An afternoon game drive gives the first introduction to this quieter, more exclusive part of the Serengeti.

Activity: Afternoon game drive in the western Serengeti Grumeti area

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in western Serengeti

Day 4

Full Day in Western Serengeti

A full day in the western corridor. The area is defined by rolling plains, river systems, and dense vegetation that creates ideal habitat for a wide range of species. Wildebeest and zebra concentrate here during the Grumeti migration (May to July), while resident lions, hyenas, and crocodiles along the river make this productive year-round.

Distance: Game drives within the western Serengeti

Activity: Full-day game drives with picnic lunch in the bush

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in western Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 5

Second Full Day in Western Serengeti — Grumeti River Focus

A second full day exploring the western corridor of Serengeti National Park. The Grumeti River is the focal point — home to large Nile crocodiles and hippo pools, and during migration season the site of dramatic river crossings. The western corridor's exceptional ecological diversity and raw character make it one of the Serengeti ecosystem's most rewarding areas for sustained exploration.

Distance: Game drives within the western Serengeti

Activity: Full-day game drives focused on the Grumeti River area

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in western Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 6

Western to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, drive east toward the central Serengeti. The route passes through a mix of open plains, acacia woodland, and rocky kopjes. An afternoon game drive in the famous Seronera area adds the year-round predator activity of the central plains to complement the western corridor experience.

Distance: Approximately 100 km from western to central Serengeti

Activity: En route game drive; afternoon game drive in central Seronera area

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in central Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 7

Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

After breakfast, depart from the central Serengeti and head toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The scenic drive ascends from open savannah to the highlands, arriving at the crater rim in the late afternoon.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp on the Ngorongoro crater rim

Meals: Full Board

Day 8

Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive — Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. The crater floor hosts elephants, lions, buffalo, hippos, flamingos, and the rare black rhino. A picnic lunch near the hippo pool is followed by the ascent and the return drive to Arusha.

Distance: Approximately 200 km from Ngorongoro to Arusha

Activity: Ngorongoro Crater game drive with picnic lunch; return to Arusha
