Arusha National Park Day Trip - Walking Safari & Canoeing

Overview

Arusha National Park is often overlooked by travelers heading straight to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, but it offers something those parks don't: a genuine walking safari, accompanied by an armed ranger, alongside the more typical game drive. The park's varied terrain, the Ngurdoto Crater, open grassland, and the Momela Lakes beneath Mount Meru, supports buffalo, giraffe, zebra, warthog, baboon and a wide range of birdlife, and is also one of the few places in Tanzania where a canoe safari on the Momela Lakes is possible.

Because it's so close to Arusha, this is a popular choice for travelers in the final stretch before flying home, or those looking for an easy half-day-plus introduction to East African wildlife before a longer trip. If you're climbing Mount Meru, which rises from inside this same park, this day trip is a great way to see the lower-altitude wildlife you won't encounter once you start the climb itself.

Tour Highlights

  • A genuine ranger-led walking safari, a rare opportunity not offered in most other Tanzania parks
  • Game drive through the Ngurdoto Crater and open grassland
  • Buffalo, giraffe, zebra, warthog, baboon and strong birdlife, seen at close range on foot
  • Optional canoe safari on the Momela Lakes beneath Mount Meru
  • Just outside Arusha, an easy day trip with no long drive
  • A great pairing with a Mount Meru climb, since both start from inside this same park

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha National Park

After a morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha, you'll head into Arusha National Park, whose varied terrain, swamps, montane forest, the Ngurdoto Crater and the Momela Lakes beneath Mount Meru, supports a surprising range of wildlife in a relatively small area. The day's itinerary includes a visit to the Ngurdoto Crater, where buffalo, waterbuck, giraffe, warthog, zebra and baboon are seen year-round alongside a wide variety of birdlife. At Momella Gate, an armed ranger joins your group for a walking safari, on foot, with the rare chance to experience the park's wildlife up close, an activity offered in only a few Tanzania parks. After a picnic lunch, the afternoon continues with further game viewing by vehicle through the rest of the park before the drive back to your hotel in Arusha.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this day trip?

The walking safari portion is gentle and accompanied by a ranger, with regular pauses, typically lasting up to about an hour and suitable for most fitness levels. The rest of the day is a vehicle-based game drive. No technical hiking is involved.

Is the walking safari actually safe, given the wildlife?

Yes, this is precisely why Tanzania National Parks requires an armed ranger for any walking safari, a standard safety measure rather than an indication of danger. Your ranger and guide choose the route based on recent animal movements and keep the group at a safe, sensible distance from any wildlife encountered.

When is the best time of year to visit Arusha National Park?

The park is enjoyable year-round given its relatively wet, forested terrain compared with the drier plains parks. The dry season (June to October) offers easier walking conditions and slightly more concentrated wildlife, while the wetter months bring lush scenery and strong birdlife, though trails can be muddier.

What's included in the price?

The price covers the day trip as described in the itinerary, transportation in a private 4x4 safari vehicle, a professional English-speaking guide, meals as specified (lunch), mineral water, all mentioned activities including the ranger-led walking safari, and all national park entry fees. Flights, optional activities such as the canoe safari, alcoholic and soft drinks, visa fees, tips and personal spending money are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Can we add the canoe safari on the Momela Lakes?

Yes, this can be arranged as an add-on to this day trip at an additional cost, just let us know when booking. It's a distinctive activity not available in most other Tanzania parks, and a different way to experience the Momela Lakes and the wildlife around their shores.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Yes, the walking safari in particular tends to be a highlight for children old enough to walk a reasonable distance with supervision (we'd suggest from around 8 years and up for the walking portion), and the park's proximity to Arusha makes for an easy, low-stress day.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. Arusha National Park's proximity to Arusha means a replacement vehicle or assistance can reach you quickly if needed. All vehicles carry a means of emergency communication. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from Arusha National Park, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
