Dunia Camp โ€” Heart of the Serengeti, Run by Women

Dunia Camp sits in a quiet valley between the Moru Kopjes and Seronera in the central Serengeti โ€” a location that gives it access to three of the park's best game-viewing areas from a single base. What sets Dunia apart from the dozens of other central Serengeti camps is its story: this is the only camp in the Serengeti run entirely by an all-female team, from management to guides to kitchen staff. It is not a marketing line โ€” it is Asilia Africa's flagship example of women's empowerment in the Tanzanian safari industry, and the operational quality reflects it.

The camp occupies a low-profile position in a sheltered valley, shaded by umbrella acacias and overlooking open grassland. With just eight tents and a maximum of 16 guests, Dunia maintains a genuinely intimate atmosphere. The nearest airstrip is Seronera, approximately 45 minutes by road โ€” close enough for convenient access, far enough to avoid the vehicle congestion that plagues some of the lodges closer to the Seronera River.

Location and Game Viewing

Dunia's central position is its greatest strategic advantage. From camp, morning and afternoon game drives can reach three distinct habitats: the Seronera Valley with its year-round resident game and leopard-rich riverine woodland; the Moru Kopjes, one of the only areas in the Serengeti where black rhino can still be spotted; and the open grasslands to the south, where the Great Migration passes through between March and June on its northward journey.

The Big 5 are all present in this region โ€” lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo are regularly seen, and the critically endangered black rhino at Moru Kopjes makes Dunia one of the few camps in the Serengeti ecosystem where all five can be ticked in a single stay. Between November and December, the migration herds also return south through this area on their way to the Ndutu calving grounds.

Camp and Accommodation

The eight tents are classic safari style โ€” canvas on raised timber decking, with wooden floors, en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and plumbed hot showers. Each tent has a private veranda with seating overlooking the kopjes. The family tent adds a second room with twin beds and its own en-suite, connected to the main bedroom via a shared veranda. Inside, the design is warm and unfussy: bright East African textiles, campaign-style furniture, brass hurricane lanterns, and traditional Tanzanian artefacts above the beds. There are electrical outlets for charging devices in every tent.

The communal area is a large, two-tiered wooden structure with a comfortable lounge, a well-stocked bar, and a dining area that opens onto fire-pit seating for evening drinks. The atmosphere is sociable and relaxed โ€” guests eat together, and the camp's small size means the staff know everyone by name within hours of arrival. Meals are prepared on-site: a continental or full English breakfast, a light buffet lunch, and a three-course dinner served in the tent or under the stars.

Activities

Morning and afternoon game drives are the core offering, conducted in open-sided 4x4 vehicles with guides who know the central Serengeti corridor intimately. Full-day drives with packed bush picnics are available for guests who want to cover more ground โ€” particularly useful for reaching the Moru Kopjes rhino area or the southern plains during migration season. Hot-air balloon safaris can be arranged at additional cost. Unlike some of the more remote Serengeti camps, Dunia does not currently offer walking safaris.

Who Is Dunia Camp Best For?

Dunia is a strong choice for first-time safari visitors who want a central Serengeti base with reliable year-round game viewing and straightforward access from Arusha. The price point is significantly lower than Asilia's premium camps like Namiri Plains or Sayari, making it one of the best value-for-quality options in the park. It also suits families with children aged five and above, and travellers who prefer a sociable camp atmosphere over ultra-private luxury.

SafariBando's view

Dunia Camp is the smart pick for travellers who want the central Serengeti's year-round game without paying premium-camp prices. Its location between Seronera and the Moru Kopjes gives access to all Big 5 โ€” including the black rhino that most Serengeti camps cannot offer. The all-female management team runs the operation with a warmth and attention to detail that consistently shows up in guest reviews. If Namiri Plains is the Serengeti camp for big-cat specialists, Dunia is the camp for generalists who want the broadest possible wildlife experience from a single base. Combine it with two nights at a northern Serengeti camp during migration season for a complete Serengeti circuit at a very reasonable total cost.
