Kimondo Migration Camp — Retired, Succeeded by Ubuntu and Olakira
Important update: Kimondo Migration Camp closed at the end of 2021 and is no longer operational. It has been succeeded by two Asilia Africa mobile camps — Ubuntu Migration Camp and Olakira Migration Camp — which follow the same seasonal migration-tracking model between the northern and southern Serengeti.
What Was Kimondo Migration Camp?
Kimondo was an intimate mobile tented camp operated by Asilia Africa that moved twice a year to follow the Great Wildebeest Migration through the Serengeti. Between July and October, the camp was positioned on the Lamai Wedge in the northern Serengeti — an exclusive area east of the Kogatende Bridge with only two other camps nearby, offering access to Mara River crossings without the vehicle congestion found at more popular crossing points. Between December and March, Kimondo relocated to the southern Serengeti short-grass plains, where the wildebeest gathered in vast numbers for the annual calving season.
The camp had eight tented suites plus one family tent, designed in a 1920s safari style with Moroccan accents — handwoven rugs, burnished copper lanterns, cast-iron bed frames, and canvas walls. Each tent was furnished with a king-size or twin beds, an en-suite bathroom with flush toilet and safari shower, and a small veranda with seating. The communal area included a dining tent, a library corner, and an open fire pit for evening drinks and story-sharing.
The Successor Camps: Ubuntu and Olakira
Since late 2021, travellers seeking the Kimondo experience should look at Asilia's two current migration camps:
Ubuntu Migration Camp moves between the southern Serengeti (mid-November to mid-March) and the northern Serengeti (mid-June to October). It offers a similar intimate, mobile format with upgraded amenities.
Olakira Migration Camp follows the same seasonal pattern with its own distinct character and locations. Both camps maintain Asilia's standards of guiding, hospitality and sustainability.

Kimondo Migration Camp is no longer operational — Asilia retired it at the end of 2021 and replaced it with two upgraded mobile camps: Ubuntu and Olakira. Both follow the same north–south migration-tracking model and maintain Asilia's excellent guiding and hospitality standards. If you are planning a Serengeti migration safari, we recommend Ubuntu or Olakira as the direct successors to the Kimondo experience.
