Tarangire National Park Day Trip from Arusha

Overview

Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania's smaller parks, but its elephant population punches well above its size. The park has the highest elephant density in Northern Tanzania, with herds that can reach 300 animals gathering along the Tarangire River, especially during the dry season from July to October when wildlife from the surrounding area concentrates near the only reliable water source. The landscape itself, dotted with ancient baobab trees against open savannah, is one of the most distinctive in the region.

This is a great taster safari for first-time visitors to Tanzania, a full day of genuine game viewing without committing to a multi-day itinerary. Beyond the elephants, Tarangire is also one of the best birding parks in the country, with over 550 recorded species including the ostrich, the world's largest bird. If you'd rather pair Tarangire with more parks on the same trip, see our 2-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari, which combines Tarangire with the Ngorongoro Crater.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After a morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha, it's a 2 to 3 hour drive to Tarangire National Park. The park's seasonal marshes and savannah, once hunting grounds before the national park was established in 1970, are now reserved for wildlife viewing alone. Tarangire holds the highest elephant density in Northern Tanzania year-round, with herds along the Tarangire River sometimes reaching 300 animals. During the dry season (July to October), the river is one of the few reliable water sources in the area, drawing lion, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and a wide range of antelope and gazelle species, with a chance of spotting a python if you're lucky. The park is also excellent for birdlife, with over 550 species recorded, including the ostrich, the world's largest bird. After a picnic lunch at a scenic spot within the park, the afternoon continues with further game viewing before the drive back to your hotel in Arusha before sunset.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this day trip?

No fitness requirement applies, this is a vehicle-based game drive in a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof, giving everyone a clear view and space to stand for photographs. No walking is involved beyond getting in and out of the vehicle at the picnic stop.

When is the best time of year to visit Tarangire?

July to October, the dry season, is when Tarangire is at its best, wildlife from the surrounding ecosystem concentrates along the Tarangire River, and elephant herds reach their largest size of the year. The park is good year-round, but sightings are more concentrated and reliable during these months. The wetter months (November to June) bring lush, green scenery and excellent birding, but wildlife is more dispersed across a wider area.

What animals are we likely to see?

Elephant is the headline draw, Tarangire has the highest density in Northern Tanzania and large herds are routine, especially in the dry season. Giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, and a wide range of antelope and gazelle species are also commonly seen, along with lion. Leopard and python are possible but far less predictable. Birdlife is excellent throughout the park, with over 550 species recorded.

What's included in the price?

The price covers the day trip as described in the itinerary, transportation in a private 4x4 safari vehicle, a professional English-speaking guide, meals as specified (lunch), mineral water, all mentioned activities, and all national park entry fees. Flights, optional activities, alcoholic and soft drinks, visa fees, tips and personal spending money are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Yes, this is one of the easier safari day trips for families, a single day with no overnight logistics, and Tarangire's elephant herds are usually a highlight for children. The 2 to 3 hour drive each way is the main consideration, bring snacks and entertainment for younger children for that stretch.

Is Tarangire a good introduction to safari if it's our first time in Tanzania?

Yes, this is one of the most common reasons people choose this trip, a genuine full-day game-viewing experience without the commitment of a multi-day itinerary, useful both as a standalone day and as a way to get a feel for what a longer safari would be like before committing to one.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base can dispatch a replacement quickly given Tarangire's proximity to Arusha. All vehicles carry a means of emergency communication. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from Tarangire, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
