12-Day Western Tanzania Luxury Safari - Ruaha, Katavi & Mahale

Overview

This 12-day luxury safari travels deep into the western circuit of Tanzania, a part of the country still largely undiscovered by mainstream safari traffic. The route begins with a night in Dar es Salaam, then flies into Ruaha National Park for walking safaris and game drives among some of the largest elephant herds and lion prides in East Africa. From there, the trip continues to the remote floodplains of Katavi National Park, and finishes with chimpanzee trekking in the forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Because all three parks sit far from the northern safari circuit, this itinerary is built around scheduled and shared charter flights rather than long road transfers, keeping more of the trip focused on game viewing than driving. Travellers who want to add Gombe Stream and its own chimpanzee community to a similar route should look at our 9-Day Tanzania Safari to Katavi, Mahale and Gombe, while those short on time can focus on Ruaha alone with one of our shorter Ruaha safaris.

Tour Highlights

  • Three of western Tanzania's most remote and least-visited national parks in one trip
  • Walking safaris and night game drives in Ruaha, home to roughly a tenth of the world's lion population
  • Off-road game drives and bush walks across Katavi's million-acre floodplain wilderness
  • Chimpanzee trekking in the Mahale Mountains, with afternoons free for swimming and fishing on Lake Tanganyika
  • Scheduled and shared charter flights link each park, minimising road transfer time
  • All meals, drinks and accommodation included throughout the safari portion of the trip

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Dar es Salaam

You are met on arrival and transferred to your hotel in Dar es Salaam. Use the afternoon to explore the city’s harbour-front markets and historic quarter, or simply settle in and rest ahead of tomorrow’s flight into the bush. For travellers who want to extend their stay on the coast at either end of this safari, our Dar es Salaam hotels make a comfortable base.

Distance: Airport transfer, approx. 30 minutes

Activity: Arrival and city orientation

Accommodation: Hotel in Dar es Salaam

Meals: Breakfast

Day 2

Fly to Ruaha National Park

A scheduled flight takes you from Dar es Salaam to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest national park and one of its least crowded. A game drive on arrival sets the tone, with the Mwagusi Sand River area known for super prides of lion and large herds of buffalo and elephant.

Distance: Flight Dar es Salaam to Ruaha, then transfer to camp

Activity: Arrival game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Ruaha

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Walking Safari in Ruaha

Set out on foot with an armed ranger and guide for a walking safari through the acacia and baobab country around camp, an intimate way to read tracks and signs that a vehicle would drive straight past. The afternoon brings a game drive toward the river, where hippo pods and a wide range of birdlife gather.

Distance: Morning walking safari, afternoon game drive

Activity: Walking safari and game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Ruaha (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Night Game Drive in Ruaha

A final day in Ruaha brings the option of a night game drive, revealing nocturnal species rarely seen during daylight hours and giving predators the chance to be observed while actively hunting. Daytime activity continues with further game drives across the park’s open plains and rocky kopjes.

Distance: Full day in Ruaha, optional night drive after dinner

Activity: Game drive and optional night drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Ruaha (third night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5

Fly to Katavi National Park

A shared charter flight connects Ruaha to Katavi National Park, one of Africa’s most remote protected areas. Katavi receives a fraction of the visitors of the northern parks, and the afternoon game drive often turns up some of the largest hippo and buffalo concentrations in the country.

Distance: Shared charter flight Ruaha to Katavi

Activity: Afternoon game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Katavi

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6

Game Drives in Katavi

Days in Katavi are unusually flexible, with off-road driving permitted in many areas, a rare allowance that opens up close approaches to game that would otherwise stay out of reach. Expect twice-daily game drives with a picnic lunch taken out in the bush.

Distance: Morning and afternoon game drives

Activity: Full-day game drive with bush picnic

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Katavi (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7

Walking Safari in Katavi

A guided walking safari gets you closer to Katavi’s smaller details, tracks, birdlife and the seasonal floodplain ecology that supports its huge dry-season herds. The afternoon is left open for a further game drive or simply relaxing back at camp.

Distance: Morning walking safari, free afternoon or game drive

Activity: Walking safari

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Katavi (third night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 8

Fly to the Mahale Mountains

A flight and onward boat transfer along Lake Tanganyika bring you to the Mahale Mountains, a forested range rising straight from the lakeshore and home to one of Africa’s largest wild chimpanzee populations. Settle into camp in the afternoon with time to relax on the beach before dinner.

Distance: Flight to Mahale airstrip, then boat transfer along Lake Tanganyika

Activity: Arrival and lakeshore relaxation

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Mahale Mountains

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 9

Chimpanzee Trekking in the Mahale Mountains

A full day dedicated to tracking one of the park’s habituated chimpanzee communities through the forested slopes above the lake. Treks can run from two to seven hours over uneven, sometimes steep terrain, rewarded by close encounters with chimps foraging in the canopy.

Distance: Full-day chimpanzee trekking, duration varies with chimp location

Activity: Chimpanzee trekking

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Mahale Mountains (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 10

Lake Tanganyika Free Day

A more relaxed day at Mahale, with the option of a second chimpanzee trek, fishing on Lake Tanganyika, snorkelling in its famously clear waters, or simply resting on the beach after a busy first stretch of trekking and game driving.

Distance: Free day with optional activities

Activity: Optional fishing, snorkelling or second chimp trek

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Mahale Mountains (third night)

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 12-day trip?

Most game viewing is vehicle-based, but walking safaris in Ruaha and Katavi and chimpanzee trekking at Mahale all involve walking on uneven ground, sometimes for several hours at Mahale. Reasonable fitness and comfortable closed shoes are recommended. Travellers with limited mobility should speak to us in advance, since walking days cannot be skipped without missing key park experiences.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

The dry season from June to October offers the easiest game viewing across all three parks and the most reliable chimpanzee trekking conditions at Mahale. The wet season from November to May brings lush scenery and strong birdwatching but can make trekking trails muddier and some flights weather-dependent.

How reliable is chimpanzee trekking at Mahale?

Mahale's chimpanzee community is tracked daily by experienced trackers, and sighting rates are generally good, though chimps move through the forest on their own schedule. A trek can range from a short walk to several hours, and while no operator can guarantee a sighting on any specific day, two full days at Mahale gives you more than one opportunity.

Why does this itinerary rely so much on flights rather than road transfers?

Ruaha, Katavi and Mahale sit far apart in western Tanzania, with limited or no road access between them, especially to Mahale, which is only reachable by air and boat. Flying between parks keeps more of your time focused on game viewing rather than long days on rough roads.

What wildlife can I expect to see in Ruaha and Katavi?

Ruaha is known for very large elephant herds, sizeable lion prides and a growing population of African wild dogs, set against a backdrop of baobab trees and rocky kopjes. Katavi is famous for its dry-season concentrations of hippo and buffalo in the Katuma River and floodplain areas, along with healthy populations of lion and elephant.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation and flights during the tour, all taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfers, and the meals and drinks specified in the day-by-day itinerary. International flights, additional accommodation before or after the tour, tips and personal items such as souvenirs, travel insurance and visa fees are not included.

Can this trip be combined with a Zanzibar beach extension?

Yes. Since the route starts and ends in Dar es Salaam, a short flight to Zanzibar at the end of the safari is an easy add-on for travellers who want a few days on the beach to round out the trip. Speak to us about extending your itinerary.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel or on arrival at major airports. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended, given how remote Ruaha, Katavi and Mahale all are.
