2-Day Kitulo National Park Safari from Mbeya

Overview

This 2-day safari takes you to Kitulo National Park in Tanzania's southern highlands — a high-altitude grassland plateau at around 2,600 metres known as Bustani ya Mungu, the Garden of God. The park protects one of Africa's most spectacular natural wildflower displays, including over 45 species of terrestrial orchid alongside aloes, irises, and red-hot pokers. It is also one of the country's finest birding destinations, home to endemic and near-endemic species of the southern highlands. The overnight stay at the park's government bandas gives time for both an afternoon exploration on Day 1 and a full morning on Day 2 that includes a walk to the park's scenic waterfalls.

For a shorter introduction to Kitulo without an overnight stay, see our Kitulo day trip from Mbeya. Kitulo can also be combined with visits to Ruaha or Nyerere (Selous) as part of a wider southern Tanzania itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Kitulo?

The wildflower display is most spectacular during the rainy season (November to April) when orchids and other plateau flowers are in bloom. The dry season (June to October) offers good birding and open plateau views, with fewer flowers but easier walking conditions.

What accommodation is available in the park?

The park has government-run bandas — basic but comfortable accommodation inside the park boundary. Staying in the bandas gives early morning access to the plateau before day visitors arrive, which is particularly valuable for birding.

How physically demanding is the walk?

The walking is on open grassland terrain at around 2,300 to 2,600 metres altitude. The gradients are generally gentle but the altitude means some visitors feel the reduced oxygen. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. The walking pace is set by the group and the guide.

What wildlife can I expect?

Kitulo's main appeal is its wildflower display and endemic birdlife. Key birds include the Buff-shouldered Widowbird (endemic to southern Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia), Denham's Bustard, Augur Buzzard, and Malachite Sunbird alongside many other species. Chameleons, lizards, frogs, and endemic butterfly species add to the diversity.

What does the price include?

Transportation by 4x4 safari vehicle from Mbeya, a local guide, all park fees, overnight accommodation in the park bandas, meals as specified, and water. International and domestic flights and Mbeya hotel accommodation are not included.

Can this be combined with other southern Tanzania parks?

Yes. Kitulo pairs well with Ruaha National Park and the Nyerere (Selous) ecosystem as part of a wider southern Tanzania itinerary. Contact us to discuss routing and timings.

Is this tour suitable for non-birders?

Yes. The wildflower display and the high-altitude landscape are equally rewarding for general nature enthusiasts. Your guide will tailor the experience to your interests.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa, available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival. Yellow fever documentation may be required. Consult a travel health clinic in advance.
