2-Day Kitulo National Park Safari from Mbeya

The wildflower display is most spectacular during the rainy season (November to April) when orchids and other plateau flowers are in bloom. The dry season (June to October) offers good birding and open plateau views, with fewer flowers but easier walking conditions.

The park has government-run bandas — basic but comfortable accommodation inside the park boundary. Staying in the bandas gives early morning access to the plateau before day visitors arrive, which is particularly valuable for birding.

The walking is on open grassland terrain at around 2,300 to 2,600 metres altitude. The gradients are generally gentle but the altitude means some visitors feel the reduced oxygen. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. The walking pace is set by the group and the guide.

Kitulo's main appeal is its wildflower display and endemic birdlife. Key birds include the Buff-shouldered Widowbird (endemic to southern Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia), Denham's Bustard, Augur Buzzard, and Malachite Sunbird alongside many other species. Chameleons, lizards, frogs, and endemic butterfly species add to the diversity.

Transportation by 4x4 safari vehicle from Mbeya, a local guide, all park fees, overnight accommodation in the park bandas, meals as specified, and water. International and domestic flights and Mbeya hotel accommodation are not included.
