Day 1

Kigali to Nyungwe National Park — Museum Visits — Canopy Walk

After an early breakfast and hotel checkout, the drive to Nyungwe National Park in southwestern Rwanda takes approximately five hours. En route, a visit to the Royal Palace Museum in Nyanza — a reconstructed traditional royal residence — and the adjacent Ethnographic Museum offer an introduction to Rwandan cultural history and royal traditions. After lunch on the road, you arrive at Nyungwe National Park and head directly for the canopy walk at Uwinka. The canopy walkway stretches through the treetops at heights of up to 90 metres above the forest floor, giving a remarkable aerial perspective of the rainforest canopy and the opportunity to spot birds and primates from above. After the walk, you check into your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Once located, one hour of observation is permitted. Along the way, L'Hoest's monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and troops of Angola colobus — sometimes numbering in the hundreds — are often encountered. After the trek, lunch at your lodge before the return drive to Kigali, arriving by late afternoon or evening for drop-off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport.

Frequently asked questions

What primates can I see at Nyungwe?

Nyungwe is home to 13 primate species — more than any other park in East Africa. Chimpanzees are the primary trekking target, but Angola colobus monkeys in enormous troops of up to 400 individuals, L'Hoest's monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and olive baboons are all found in the forest.

Is chimpanzee sighting guaranteed?

Sightings cannot be guaranteed — these are wild animals in a large forest. However, Nyungwe has habituated chimpanzee communities with experienced tracking teams who monitor their movements daily. Sighting rates are generally good.

What is the canopy walk like?

The Nyungwe canopy walkway at Uwinka spans 160 metres in length and reaches heights of up to 90 metres above the forest floor. It offers a spectacular aerial view of the rainforest canopy and is one of the few places in Africa where you can walk above the treetops. The walk takes approximately one to two hours.

What does the price include?

All park entrance fees and permits, chimpanzee trekking permit, canopy walk fees, museum entrance fees, 1 night half-board accommodation near Nyungwe, a professional driver and park guides, all meals as specified, all transportation in a 4x4 vehicle, and all government taxes.

Is a visa required for Rwanda?

Most nationalities can enter Rwanda visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival. East African Community citizens have free entry. Check the latest requirements for your nationality before travel.

How demanding is the chimpanzee trekking at Nyungwe?

Nyungwe's terrain varies from relatively gentle to moderately steep forest slopes. The duration of the trek depends on where the chimps are located on the day. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, and walking poles may be helpful.

Can this be combined with gorilla trekking?

Yes. A combined Rwanda itinerary visiting Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking is one of the most rewarding Rwanda experiences available. Contact us to discuss routing.

What is the best time to visit Nyungwe?

Nyungwe can be visited year-round. The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer easier trekking conditions, while the wetter months bring lush forest and more bird activity.
