Day 1

Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

After an early pick-up from your Nairobi hotel or the airport, the drive south toward Amboseli National Reserve passes Maasai settlements and views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. You arrive in time for lunch at your lodge, then head out for an afternoon game drive across the open plains.

Day 2

Full Day in Amboseli National Park

A full day of game drives covers the swamps and open plains that make Amboseli one of the most reliable parks in Africa for close-range elephant encounters, with large herds gathering at the permanent swamps fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro. Buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and over 400 recorded bird species are also present, with lion and the rare black rhino occasionally seen.

Day 3

Amboseli to Nairobi

Activity: Final game drive, then return drive to Nairobi

Is Mount Kilimanjaro visible from Amboseli?

On clear days, yes, typically in the early morning before cloud builds later in the day. Kilimanjaro itself sits across the border in Tanzania, but Amboseli is widely considered the best place in Kenya to photograph it alongside elephant herds.

Why is Amboseli known for elephant photography specifically?

Permanent swamps fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro keep water and grazing available year-round, concentrating large elephant herds at close range in open terrain, conditions that make for unusually reliable, close elephant sightings compared to denser bush parks.

Is Amboseli good for the Big Five?

Elephant and buffalo are reliably seen. Lion are present though less dense than the Mara, and black rhino are rare in Amboseli specifically. Leopard sightings are uncommon given the open terrain. Amboseli is better suited to elephant and landscape photography than a guaranteed Big Five checklist.
