Frequently asked questions

Why are Tsavo’s elephants red?

Tsavo’s elephants regularly dust-bathe in the park’s red volcanic soil, which coats their skin and gives them their distinctive reddish colour, a visual signature unique to this part of Kenya.

What is the difference between Tsavo East and Tsavo West?

Tsavo West has more varied terrain, including lava flows, natural springs and hills, with denser vegetation in places. Tsavo East is flatter and more open, centred on the Galana River, and tends to hold larger, more visible elephant herds.

What is Mzima Springs?

A series of natural springs in Tsavo West producing over 95 million gallons of clear water daily, fed by underground rivers from the Chyulu Hills. An underwater viewing tank allows close views of hippo and crocodile beneath the surface.

Is this itinerary good for first-time Kenya visitors?

Yes, particularly for travellers who want a less crowded alternative to the Maasai Mara, with Tsavo receiving notably fewer visitors despite its size and wildlife density.

What does the price include?

A private safari vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide, all park entry fees, the Mzima Springs visit, roundtrip transfer from Nairobi, 3 nights of lodge accommodation, and all meals as specified from lunch on Day 1 through lunch on Day 4.

Can this itinerary be combined with a beach extension?

Yes. Tsavo East sits roughly midway between Nairobi and the coast, making a Mombasa or Diani Beach extension a natural add-on after this safari. Let us know if you would like this built into your itinerary.
