4-Day Tanzania Camping Safari - Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Overview

This 4-day camping safari covers the same route as our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari, Tarangire National Park, the central Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, at a lower price point by swapping lodge accommodation for public campsites. You'll sleep in a dome tent on a proper camp bed for all three nights, with all meals cooked by our crew, while still getting the same private 4x4, driver-guide and park access, including a night inside the Serengeti itself, as the lodge version.

This is the shortest camping itinerary that still gives a complete Big Five circuit, with one night inside the Serengeti for predator coverage and a full crater game drive on the final day. If comfort matters more than budget, our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the identical route with lodge accommodation. Travelers who want more time in the Serengeti should look at our 5-Day Tanzania Camping Safari, which adds a second full day inside the park.

Tour Highlights

  • Tarangire's large elephant herds and ancient baobab woodlands
  • One night camping inside the Serengeti itself, around the predator-rich Seronera Valley
  • Full crater floor game drive at Ngorongoro on the final day, with strong black rhino sighting chances
  • Budget-friendly format, same parks and game drives as our lodge safari at a lower price
  • Dome tent with proper camp bed at public campsites, all meals cooked by our safari crew
  • Private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide throughout

You'll enjoy a full game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue in the afternoon to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

The drive itself is part of the game viewing, with giraffe and zebra often visible along the access road. You'll reach the Seronera area by mid-afternoon for your first Serengeti game drive before dinner and overnight inside the park.

Frequently asked questions

What is camping like on this safari, is it safe?

You'll stay at established public campsites with a perimeter fence or boundary, shared ablution blocks with toilets and showers, and a dedicated area for our mess tent and cooking, including one night inside the Serengeti itself. Dome tents are set up before you arrive and taken down by our crew, you just bring your sleeping bag (or rent one from us) and personal items. Campsites in wildlife areas are well used by safari operators and not isolated, security is part of the campsite arrangement, though you're asked not to walk around alone after dark and to use a torch and call our crew if you need to.

How fit do I need to be for this 4-day safari?

This is a vehicle-based safari, no fitness threshold applies and no walking is required for the game drives. The only physical consideration is camping itself, getting in and out of a tent, and using shared ablution facilities a short walk from your tent, for three nights. Travellers with limited mobility should let us know in advance, as camping may not suit everyone, our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the identical route with lodge accommodation.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

June to October is the dry season, with animals concentrated at water sources and the highest sighting reliability of the year, this is also when Tarangire's elephant herds are at their largest. January and February is the southern Serengeti calving season, with large predator concentrations and fewer tourists. The long rains in April and May can make campsites muddier, particularly inside the Serengeti, though rates are at their lowest. The Ngorongoro Crater is productive year-round.

What's included in the price?

The price covers a private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide, all park entry and conservation fees for Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area (including the Crater service fee), camping equipment (dome tent, camp bed, mess tent, camp chairs and table) and campsite fees for all 3 nights, a safari cook and all meals as specified, and drinking water throughout. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, sleeping bag rental, alcoholic drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

How does this compare to the lodge version of this safari?

The route, game drives, park fees, vehicle and guide are identical to our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari. The only difference is where you sleep, dome tents at public campsites including one night inside the Serengeti on this itinerary, versus lodges or tented camps on the lodge version, and the price reflects that difference. Camping inside the Serengeti itself, hearing the bush at night from your tent, is one of the most memorable parts of this itinerary for many travelers.

Is this safari suitable for families with children?

Camping safaris work well for families who enjoy the outdoors and don't mind shared facilities, many children love the experience of sleeping in a tent on safari, especially inside the Serengeti. For families who'd prefer en-suite rooms, particularly with very young children, our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the same route with lodge accommodation. Let us know ages in advance so we can advise on what's realistic.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylactics are recommended. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is required for all safari participants, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles, camping equipment and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base dispatches a replacement. All vehicles carry a satellite phone for emergencies, and campsites have radio or phone contact with the operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from any of the parks on this itinerary, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
