5-Day Tanzania Camping Safari - Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Overview

This 5-day camping safari covers the same route as our 5-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari, with two full nights inside the Serengeti, the extra time that makes the biggest difference to predator sightings on the Northern Circuit. The route starts with a day in Tarangire National Park, spends two nights camping inside the Serengeti around the Seronera Valley, then loops back through the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara on the return to Arusha.

Camping for two nights inside the Serengeti, falling asleep and waking up to the sounds of the bush, is one of the most memorable parts of this itinerary. If comfort matters more than budget, our 5-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the identical route with lodge accommodation. Travelers with only 4 days should look at our 4-Day Tanzania Camping Safari, which covers Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro with one fewer Serengeti night.

Tour Highlights

  • Two full nights camping inside the Serengeti, around the predator-rich Seronera Valley
  • Tarangire's large elephant herds and ancient baobab woodlands
  • Full crater floor game drive at Ngorongoro, with strong black rhino sighting chances
  • Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions, flamingos and groundwater forest on the return leg
  • Budget-friendly format, same parks and game drives as our lodge safari at a lower price
  • Dome tent with proper camp bed at public campsites, all meals cooked by our safari crew

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha / Moshi to Tarangire National Park

Morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for the drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and a high concentration of wildlife along the Tarangire River. You'll enjoy a full game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue in the afternoon to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approx. 120 km from Arusha, full day including game drive

Activity: Full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park

Accommodation: Camping in the Karatu / Tarangire area

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

Karatu to the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Highlands

After breakfast, you drive west through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pausing at the crater rim viewpoint for your first sight of the caldera floor, then descend onto the Serengeti plains via Naabi Hill Gate. The drive itself is part of the game viewing, with giraffe and zebra often visible along the access road. You'll reach the Seronera area by mid-afternoon for your first Serengeti game drive before dinner and overnight inside the park.

Day 3

Full Day in the Serengeti

A full day dedicated to game drives in the Serengeti, with a picnic lunch out on the plains. The Seronera Valley has the highest leopard density in East Africa and a resident lion population that your guide tracks daily, alongside elephant, buffalo, giraffe and (seasonally) the wildebeest migration. Morning and afternoon drives explore different parts of the central Serengeti, with your guide adjusting the route based on recent sightings.

Distance: Game drives within the park, distances vary by wildlife sightings

Activity: Full-day game drive in the central Serengeti

Accommodation: Camping inside or near the Serengeti (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Highlands

An early morning game drive, the best window for predator activity as lions return from overnight hunts, before you exit the park at Naabi Hill and retrace the route through the highlands toward Ngorongoro. You arrive at a lodge in the Karatu area or near the crater rim in the afternoon, with time to relax before dinner ahead of the next morning's crater descent.

Distance: Approx. 200 km, 4-5 hours driving including morning game drive

Activity: Morning Serengeti game drive, then drive to the Ngorongoro Highlands

Accommodation: Camping in the Karatu / Ngorongoro area

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater & Lake Manyara – End of Safari

Early breakfast, then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive across its 260 km² floor of grassland, marsh and acacia forest, home to lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo, with one of Tanzania's most reliable black rhino populations. After a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, you ascend the rim road and continue toward Arusha, with a stop at Lake Manyara National Park en route for a shorter game drive among its tree-climbing lions, flamingos and groundwater forest, before the final drive to Arusha or Moshi, or transfer to the airport as arranged.

Distance: Crater floor game drive, then approx. 2 hours to Lake Manyara and 1.5-2 hours on to Arusha

Activity: Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive, then en-route stop at Lake Manyara

Frequently asked questions

What is camping like on this safari, is it safe?

You'll stay at established public campsites with a perimeter fence or boundary, shared ablution blocks with toilets and showers, and a dedicated area for our mess tent and cooking, including two nights inside the Serengeti itself. Dome tents are set up before you arrive and taken down by our crew, you just bring your sleeping bag (or rent one from us) and personal items. Campsites in wildlife areas are well used by safari operators and not isolated, security is part of the campsite arrangement, though you're asked not to walk around alone after dark and to use a torch and call our crew if you need to.

How fit do I need to be for this 5-day safari?

This is a vehicle-based safari, no fitness threshold applies and no walking is required for the game drives. The only physical consideration is camping itself, getting in and out of a tent, and using shared ablution facilities a short walk from your tent, for four nights. Travellers with limited mobility should let us know in advance, as camping may not suit everyone, our 5-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the identical route with lodge accommodation.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

June to October is the dry season, with animals concentrated at water sources and the highest sighting reliability of the year, this is also when Tarangire's elephant herds are at their largest. January and February is the southern Serengeti calving season, with large predator concentrations and significantly fewer tourists than the peak months. The long rains in April and May can make campsites muddier, particularly inside the Serengeti and around Lake Manyara, though rates are at their lowest. The Ngorongoro Crater is productive year-round.

What animals will we likely see?

Across this 5-day route you are highly likely to see lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, baboon and a wide range of antelope and birdlife. Black rhino is likely on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. Leopard is possible, the Serengeti has the highest leopard density in East Africa, and two full days there meaningfully improves your odds, but leopards are solitary and elusive. Cheetah is likely on the Serengeti plains, and Lake Manyara adds a chance of tree-climbing lions and flamingos.

What's included in the price?

The price covers a private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide, all park entry and conservation fees (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area including the Crater service fee, and Lake Manyara), camping equipment and campsite fees for all 4 nights including 2 nights inside the Serengeti, a safari cook and all meals as specified, and drinking water throughout. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, sleeping bag rental, alcoholic drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

How does this compare to the lodge version of this safari?

The route, game drives, park fees, vehicle and guide are identical to our 5-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari. The only difference is where you sleep, dome tents at public campsites including two nights inside the Serengeti on this itinerary, versus lodges or tented camps on the lodge version, and the price reflects that difference. Camping inside the Serengeti for two nights is one of the most immersive experiences on the Northern Circuit.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylactics are recommended. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is required for all safari participants, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles, camping equipment and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base dispatches a replacement. All vehicles carry a satellite phone for emergencies, and campsites have radio or phone contact with the operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from any of the parks on this itinerary, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
