5-Day Ndutu Photographic Safari - Calving Season Predator Action

Overview

The Ndutu plains, south of the main Serengeti ecosystem, host the wildebeest calving season from December through March, when over two million wildebeest and zebra give birth on the short-grass plains. The concentration of newborn calves draws an exceptional density of predators, and this 5-day safari is built specifically around photographing that action: low, slow vehicle approaches, extended time at active hunts, and a group capped at four photographers per vehicle.

For a broader introduction to Tanzania's northern circuit outside the calving season, see our 6-Day Tanzania Photographic Safari. Travellers wanting the Mara River crossing instead of the calving grounds should look at our 6-Day North Migration Safari, which covers the July to October crossing season further north.

Tour Highlights

  • Wildebeest calving season on the Ndutu short-grass plains, December through March
  • Exceptional predator density, with lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas hunting newborn calves
  • Two full days of dedicated photography on the Ndutu plains
  • Low-angle vehicle positioning and extended time at active hunts rather than a fixed driving schedule
  • A full Ngorongoro Crater descent to close the trip, with black rhino and dense resident lion prides
  • Vehicles limited to four photographers with window-mounted bean bag supports

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport you are met by your photographic safari guide and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. The evening is free, with a briefing on the Ndutu calving season, expected light conditions, and the photographic approach used over the coming days.

Distance: Airport transfer to Arusha hotel

Activity: Transfer and safari briefing

Accommodation: Hotel or lodge in Arusha

Meals: Half Board

Day 2

Arusha to Ndutu - First Photography Session

After an early breakfast you depart Arusha and drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands toward the Ndutu region. On arrival, the first game drive moves directly onto the short-grass plains, where newborn calves and the predators that follow them are typically found within the first few hours.

Distance: Approximately 4 hours from Arusha to Ndutu via the Ngorongoro highlands

Activity: Afternoon photographic game drive on the Ndutu plains

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Ndutu area

Meals: Full Board

Day 3

Full Day Photography on the Ndutu Plains

A full day is spent across the Ndutu plains, where the open, flat terrain allows long, uninterrupted sightlines and low-angle vehicle approaches to active hunts. The guide prioritises known predator territories and tracks calving concentrations reported by other guides in the area, with the schedule split into a sunrise and a sunset session.

Distance: Game drives across the Ndutu short-grass plains

Activity: Full day photographic game drive, split around midday light

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Ndutu area

Meals: Full Board

Day 4

Second Full Day Photography - Ndutu and Southern Serengeti

A second day continues across Ndutu and into the adjoining southern Serengeti plains, widening the search area for fresh predator activity. Cheetah hunts in open daylight are a particular focus here, given the flat terrain and the speed of the chase, alongside the steady stream of newborn calves moving with their mothers.

Distance: Game drives across Ndutu and the southern Serengeti plains

Activity: Full day photographic game drive, split around midday light

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Ndutu area

Meals: Full Board

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater Photography and Return to Arusha

An early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater closes the trip, with the enclosed caldera offering some of the most reliable Big Five photography in Africa, including the rare black rhino and dense resident lion prides. After the crater session, the drive returns to Arusha, arriving in the afternoon for onward connections.

Distance: Approximately 2 hours from Ndutu to Ngorongoro, then 3 hours from Ngorongoro to Arusha

Activity: Morning crater descent, afternoon transfer to Arusha

Frequently asked questions

When is the Ndutu calving season?

The wildebeest calving season at Ndutu typically runs from late December through March, peaking in January and February, when thousands of calves are born daily on the short-grass plains.

Why is the calving season good for photography specifically?

The open, flat terrain gives long, uninterrupted sightlines for predator hunts in daylight, which is rare in thicker bush environments. The concentration of newborn calves also means predator activity is far more frequent than at other times of year.

What is different about this trip compared to a standard Ndutu safari?

Vehicles are capped at four photographers instead of a full passenger load, the schedule prioritises sunrise and sunset light over covering distance, and the guide spends extended time at active hunts rather than moving on once a sighting is confirmed.

What equipment is recommended for this safari?

A telephoto lens in the 100 to 400mm range or longer is recommended for predator action, along with a wider lens for landscape and herd scenes. Window-mounted bean bag supports are provided in the vehicle.

Is Ndutu the only place to see the wildebeest migration?

Ndutu hosts the calving phase of the migration. The northern Serengeti around the Mara River hosts the river crossings from July to October as the herds move toward Kenya. Both are part of the same annual migration cycle, but at different times of year.

Can I visit Ndutu outside the calving season?

Ndutu holds resident wildlife year-round and can be visited outside the December to March window, but the exceptional predator density driven by newborn calves is specific to the calving season itself.

What does the price include?

All park and conservancy fees, the Ngorongoro crater service fee, full-board accommodation throughout, a professional driver-guide, a 4x4 safari vehicle with photography supports, drinking water, and airport transfers. International flights and visa fees are not included.

Can this itinerary be extended?

Yes. Extra nights in Ndutu can be added, or the trip can be combined with our 6-Day Tanzania Photographic Safari or 9-Day Grand Tanzania Photographic Safari for a longer circuit. Contact us to discuss options.
