9-Day Grand Tanzania Photographic Safari - Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Ruaha

Overview

This 9-day photographic safari links Tanzania's two great circuits in one trip. The first five days follow the northern parks - Tarangire, the central Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater - before a scheduled flight connects to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania's largest park and one of its least visited, for three further days of photography across a completely different landscape of baobab-lined river systems and rolling miombo woodland.

For travellers who only want the northern half of this itinerary, see our 6-Day Tanzania Photographic Safari. For a Ruaha-only fly-in option from the coast, see our 4-Day Ruaha Fly-In Safari from Zanzibar, and for a longer southern circuit combining Ruaha with Nyerere, see our 8-Day Nyerere and Ruaha Luxury Safari.

Tour Highlights

  • A full circuit linking Tanzania's northern and southern parks in a single trip
  • Tarangire National Park for baobab landscapes and dense elephant herds
  • Two full days of photography in the central Serengeti for resident big cats
  • A full Ngorongoro Crater descent for Big Five photography, including black rhino

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After an early breakfast in Arusha you depart for Tarangire National Park, roughly two hours away. Tarangire holds one of the highest elephant densities of any park in Tanzania, set against ancient baobab trees and open grassland that photograph particularly well in low afternoon light. An afternoon game drive begins on arrival.

Distance: Approximately 2 hours from Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Activity: Afternoon photographic game drive in Tarangire National Park

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Tarangire National Park

Meals: Half Board

Day 2

Full Day Photography in Tarangire National Park

A full day is spent inside Tarangire, working the river and swamp areas where elephant herds, buffalo, and resident predators gather, alongside the baobab-lined ridgelines that define the park's landscape photography. The schedule is split around midday, with sunrise and sunset sessions.

Distance: Game drives within Tarangire National Park

Activity: Full day photographic game drive, split around midday light

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Tarangire National Park

Meals: Full Board

Day 3

Tarangire to Central Serengeti

Departing Tarangire, the route climbs through the Ngorongoro highlands before descending onto the open plains of the central Serengeti, with photo stops along the rim for the crater and highland scenery. The afternoon is spent on a game drive into the Seronera area, where resident lion prides and leopards are regularly found along the river lines.

Distance: Approximately 6 hours from Tarangire to central Serengeti via Ngorongoro highlands

Activity: Travel day with scenic photo stops, afternoon game drive on arrival

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in central Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 4

Full Day Photography in Central Serengeti

A full day is dedicated to the Seronera valley and surrounding plains, the most predator-dense section of the Serengeti year-round. The guide prioritises known territories for lion and leopard, with the vehicle positioned low and close for eye-level shooting wherever sightings allow.

Distance: Game drives within the central Serengeti

Activity: Full day photographic game drive, split around midday light

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in central Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 5

Serengeti to Ngorongoro - Crater Photography

A final morning game drive in the Serengeti is followed by the drive up to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. An afternoon descent into the crater floor follows, with the enclosed caldera holding one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, including the rare black rhino and large flamingo flocks on the soda lake.

Distance: Approximately 3 hours from central Serengeti to Ngorongoro, then a crater floor game drive

Activity: Morning game drive, afternoon Ngorongoro Crater descent

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp on the Ngorongoro Crater rim

Meals: Full Board

Day 6

Ngorongoro to Arusha, Fly to Ruaha National Park

A final early morning session on the crater rim is followed by the drive back down to Arusha, where a scheduled light aircraft flight connects south to Ruaha National Park. Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park and one of its least visited, with a landscape of baobab-studded hills and the Great Ruaha River drawing wildlife throughout the dry season. An afternoon game drive begins on arrival.

Distance: Approximately 3 hours Ngorongoro to Arusha by road, then a scheduled flight to Ruaha National Park

Activity: Morning game drive, flight connection, afternoon game drive in Ruaha

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Ruaha National Park

Meals: Full Board

Day 7

Full Day Photography in Ruaha National Park

A full day is spent along the Great Ruaha River and the baobab-covered hills that surround it. Ruaha holds one of Tanzania's largest elephant populations and significant lion prides, and with far fewer vehicles than the northern parks, sightings can be worked at length without competing for position. The schedule is split into a sunrise and a sunset session.

Distance: Game drives within Ruaha National Park

Activity: Full day photographic game drive, split around midday light

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Ruaha National Park

Meals: Full Board

Day 8

Second Full Day Photography in Ruaha National Park

A second full day continues across Ruaha, with the guide widening the search to riverine forest areas favoured by leopard and the open miombo woodland where greater and lesser kudu, sable antelope, and wild dog are occasionally encountered, alongside the park's resident lion and elephant population.

Distance: Game drives within Ruaha National Park

Activity: Full day photographic game drive, split around midday light

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Ruaha National Park

Meals: Full Board

Day 9

Final Ruaha Game Drive and Fly to Dar es Salaam

A final morning game drive covers any remaining priority sightings before transferring to the airstrip for a scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam, arriving in time for onward international connections.

Distance: Morning game drive, then a scheduled flight from Ruaha to Dar es Salaam

Activity: Morning photographic game drive, flight to Dar es Salaam

Accommodation: N/A - fly to Dar es Salaam

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Frequently asked questions

Why combine the northern and southern circuits on one photographic trip?

The two regions look completely different. The north offers open plains, predator density, and the Ngorongoro Crater, while Ruaha in the south adds baobab-lined river landscapes, far fewer vehicles, and species like greater kudu and wild dog that are uncommon further north.

How does the flight between the north and Ruaha work?

A scheduled light aircraft connects Arusha to Ruaha National Park, with the route and timing arranged as part of the itinerary. Luggage is limited to soft-sided bags on this leg, which we can advise on ahead of travel.

Is Ruaha less crowded than the northern parks?

Yes. Ruaha receives a fraction of the visitor numbers of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, which allows longer, uninterrupted time at sightings without other vehicles present.

What is different about this trip compared to a standard combined safari?

Vehicles are capped at four photographers in both regions, the schedule prioritises sunrise and sunset light over covering distance, and the guide spends extended time at active sightings rather than moving on quickly.

What wildlife is Ruaha known for that the north is not?

Ruaha holds healthy populations of greater and lesser kudu, sable and roan antelope, and occasional wild dog sightings, alongside large elephant herds and lion prides, set against a baobab and miombo woodland landscape distinct from the northern plains.

What does the price include?

All park and conservancy fees, the Ngorongoro crater service fee, the scheduled flight between Arusha and Ruaha and onward to Dar es Salaam, full-board accommodation throughout, professional driver-guides, 4x4 safari vehicles with photography supports, drinking water, and airport transfers. International flights into and out of Tanzania are not included.

Is this itinerary physically demanding?

No specialised fitness is required. The trip is vehicle-based throughout, with one internal flight, and is suitable for most reasonably mobile travellers.

Can this itinerary be shortened or adjusted?

Yes. The northern leg alone is available as our 6-Day Tanzania Photographic Safari, and the Ruaha leg can be paired with Nyerere National Park instead for a longer southern-only circuit. Contact us to discuss options.
