5-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari - Northern Circuit

Overview

This 5-day safari takes in the very best of Tanzania's Northern Circuit, visiting two of the country's most iconic destinations: Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with its jaw-dropping volcanic crater. Every safari is different, that's the real beauty of it, but you'll certainly witness some of the planet's best wildlife in its stunning natural environments, with two full days inside the Serengeti's central plains giving genuine depth to your time in the park.

This itinerary is built around substantial time in just two parks rather than spreading days across more destinations, ideal if you want to really get to know the Serengeti rather than passing through quickly. If you'd like to add Tarangire to the same trip, our 7-Day Classic Tanzania Safari covers all three parks.

Tour Highlights

  • Two full days exploring the Serengeti's central plains, where bushland meets grassland
  • A full day descending into the Ngorongoro Crater, with a chance of spotting black rhino
  • Scenic en-route game viewing on the drive between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro
  • Lodge and tented camp accommodation throughout
  • All park fees, government VAT and Serengeti concession fees included
  • A professional, experienced English-speaking driver-guide throughout

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Serengeti

The roughly seven-hour journey westward from Arusha to the Serengeti opens your eyes to the colours and character of Tanzania along the way, perhaps a glimpse of Maasai herdsmen driving their flocks of goats to new pastures. You'll get to know your driver-guide on the drive, often surprisingly knowledgeable on whatever you ask. After the long journey, you'll stop for lunch before an afternoon game drive.

Distance: Approx. 7 hours' drive from Arusha, plus afternoon game drive

Activity: Drive to the Serengeti, afternoon game drive

Accommodation: Luxury tented camp inside the Serengeti

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

& 3: Full Days of Discovery in the Serengeti

Two full days exploring from your accommodation in the Central Serengeti, where wildlife is abundant enough that you may feel it's come to find you rather than the other way around. The exact highlight of each day is impossible to predict, the animals don't publish their schedule, but this area is where bushland meets grassland, a favorite spot for big cats hunting prey. Cheetah, leopard and lion are all genuine possibilities across these two days.

Distance: Two full days of game driving

Activity: Two full days of game driving in the Central Serengeti

Accommodation: Luxury tented camp inside the Serengeti (second and third nights)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Serengeti to Ngorongoro

After a morning game drive and lunch, you'll head southeast toward Ngorongoro, a distance of around 145km taking roughly 3.5 hours.

Distance: Morning game drive, then approx. 3.5 hours' drive to Ngorongoro

Activity: Morning Serengeti game drive, transfer to Ngorongoro

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp near the Ngorongoro crater rim

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater & Return to Arusha

An early breakfast before descending into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning of game viewing on the crater floor, home to a wide range of Tanzania's wildlife, with some luck, you may even spot a black rhino here. You'll depart for Arusha in the late afternoon.

Distance: Crater floor game drive, then drive back to Arusha

Activity: Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive, then return to Arusha

Accommodation: N/A, end of safari

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Frequently asked questions

Why does this itinerary spend two full days in the Serengeti rather than splitting time across more parks?

This trip is built specifically for travelers who want real depth in the Serengeti rather than a quick pass-through. Two full days gives meaningfully more time to track wildlife movements, follow up on sightings, and explore different areas of the park than a single day allows.

How fit do I need to be for this safari?

No fitness requirement applies, this is a vehicle-based safari throughout, with no walking required beyond getting in and out of the vehicle at picnic and viewing stops.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

June to October is the dry season, with wildlife concentrated around water sources and generally the most reliable game viewing in both parks. January and February is the southern Serengeti calving season, with strong predator activity. The Ngorongoro Crater is productive year-round regardless of season.

What's included in the price?

The price covers transport and game viewing in a modified 4x4 Land Cruiser with a photographic roof hatch, services of a professional, experienced English-speaking driver-guide, all park fees and game drives as per the itinerary, mineral water per person during game drives, all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner during the safari), government VAT and Serengeti concession fees, and airport transfer. Personal items, domestic and international flight tickets, gratuities, travel insurance, and drinks and beverages at lodges or camps are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What animals are we likely to see?

Cheetah, leopard and lion are all genuine possibilities given the Central Serengeti's location where bushland meets grassland, a favorite hunting ground for big cats. The Ngorongoro Crater offers a particularly dense concentration of wildlife, including a chance of spotting the endangered black rhino, alongside elephant, buffalo, hippo and hyena.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Yes, the relatively focused two-park structure makes for a simpler trip to plan around than a multi-park itinerary, and the two full days in the Serengeti give plenty of time to spot wildlife at a relaxed pace.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base can dispatch a replacement. All vehicles carry a means of emergency communication, and lodges have radio or phone contact with the operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
