6-Day Kilimanjaro Climbing Marangu Route

Overview

The Marangu Route, nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route", is the oldest trekking route on Mount Kilimanjaro and the only one offering dormitory-style mountain huts at every overnight stop, so there's no tent to pitch and no sleeping bag on bare ground. The route follows the line used by Hans Meyer on the mountain's first recorded summit in 1889, climbing through all five of Kilimanjaro's climatic zones: montane rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone around Uhuru Peak.

This 6-day itinerary adds a dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo Hut (3,720m) before the summit push, a meaningful step up from the bare-minimum 5-Day Marangu Route Climb, which skips this day and carries a noticeably lower summit success rate. Because Marangu uses the same path for both ascent and descent, it sees more foot traffic than alternatives like Machame or Lemosho, but its hut accommodation and gentler logistics make it a popular choice for first-time high-altitude trekkers on a tighter schedule. Travellers prioritising the highest possible summit success rate over hut accommodation may prefer our 7-Day Lemosho Route Climb, which spreads acclimatization over a longer approach.

Tour Highlights

  • The only Kilimanjaro route with mountain hut accommodation every night, no tents to pitch
  • Follow the historic 1889 Hans Meyer route, the first successful ascent of Kilimanjaro

  • Cross all five climatic zones, from montane rainforest to the arctic summit zone
  • Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m) via Gilman's Point, Africa's highest point

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Moshi & Pre-Climb Briefing

Your SafariBando representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening, your mountain guide runs through the route, weather expectations, and a full equipment check, so any missing gear can be rented locally before you set off.

Distance: Airport transfer, approx. 45 minutes

Activity: Arrival, equipment check and pre-climb briefing

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Meals: Dinner

Day 2

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After an early breakfast, drive around 45 minutes from Moshi to Marangu Gate (1,860m) to complete park registration. The trail climbs gently through dense montane rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and turacos, before reaching Mandara Hut.

Distance: 11 km, 5-6 hours walking

Activity: Trek through montane rainforest to Mandara Hut

Accommodation: Mandara Hut (dormitory, 2,720m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

The forest gives way to heath and moorland as you climb toward Horombo Hut, with clear views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks on a fine day. The trail is longer than Day 2 but less steep, giving your body time to adjust to the thinning air.

Distance: 11 km, 5-6 hours walking

Activity: Trek through heath and moorland with views of Kibo and Mawenzi

Accommodation: Horombo Hut (dormitory, 3,720m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

A short, optional guided hike toward Zebra Rocks (around 4,000m) puts the 'climb high, sleep low' principle into practice, helping your body adjust before the higher camps. The rest of the day is free to rest, hydrate, and prepare gear for the summit push.

Distance: Approx. 4 km round trip (optional acclimatization hike)

Activity: Acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks, rest at camp

Accommodation: Horombo Hut (dormitory, 3,720m), second night

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

The trail crosses the Saddle, a stark alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo, to reach Kibo Hut at the base of the final summit slopes. An early dinner and a few hours of rest follow, ahead of a midnight wake-up call for the summit attempt.

Distance: 10 km, 5-7 hours walking

Activity: Trek across the Saddle to summit base camp

Accommodation: Kibo Hut (dormitory, 4,720m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & early Dinner

Day 6

Summit Day – Uhuru Peak & Descent to Horombo Hut

Departing Kibo Hut around midnight, you ascend steep scree switchbacks to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Africa's highest point, usually arriving around sunrise. After photos and a short rest, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a late breakfast before continuing down to Horombo Hut for the night.

Distance: Approx. 16 km (6 km ascent, 10 km descent), 10-14 hours

Activity: Summit climb to Uhuru Peak, then descent to Horombo Hut

Accommodation: Horombo Hut (dormitory, 3,720m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & Return to Moshi

A final descent through moorland and rainforest brings you back to Marangu Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate (Gilman's Point or Uhuru Peak certificates are issued depending on your highest point reached). Your driver transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned hot shower, a proper bed, and a celebratory dinner after a demanding week on the mountain.

Distance: 18 km, 5-6 hours walking, plus approx. 1 hour drive back to Moshi

Activity: Descent to Marangu Gate, summit certificate ceremony, transfer to Moshi

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi (second night)

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch (on the mountain)

Day 8

Departure from Moshi

After breakfast, you're free until your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward flight. If you'd rather not end the trip on the mountain, this is also the natural point to roll straight into a Northern Circuit safari, many climbers combine this climb with our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari to Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro for a full climb-and-safari trip.

Distance: Airport transfer, approx. 45 minutes (or onward to your next safari)

Activity: Free morning, then departure transfer or onward safari

Accommodation: N/A, end of Kilimanjaro programme

Meals: Breakfast

Extend your trip

  • Before the climb: tackle Mount Meru (4 days) first as an acclimatization climb. Trekkers who summit Meru before Kilimanjaro arrive already partly acclimatized, which measurably improves Marangu Route summit success rates.
  • After the climb: continue straight into a Northern Circuit safari from Arusha or Moshi rather than flying home tired and unwound, our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari is a popular pairing.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be to climb Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route?

No technical climbing skills or ropework are required, but this is a serious physical undertaking. You'll walk for 5 to 7 hours a day on Days 2, 3, 5 and 7, with the summit night (Day 6) involving 10 to 14 hours of continuous walking at altitude. We recommend several months of regular cardio and hiking with a loaded daypack before you travel. Travellers with limited mobility should speak to us in advance, as the terrain on summit night in particular is not adaptable.

When is the best time to climb the Marangu Route?

The two main dry windows are late June to October and late December to March, which offer the most stable weather and the clearest summit views. January and February are also popular because temperatures are slightly milder, though nights at Kibo Hut are cold year-round. April, May and November are the rainy seasons; the route is still climbable but expect wetter trails through the lower rainforest zone and reduced visibility higher up.

What is the summit success rate on this 6-day Marangu Route?

Adding the extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut on Day 4 is the single biggest factor that improves your chances compared with the bare 5-day version of this route. Industry-wide, 6-day Marangu itineraries with this extra day typically see summit success in the 85 to 90 percent range, against roughly 65 to 70 percent on the 5-day version, though individual fitness, pace and how your body handles altitude all play a role and no operator can guarantee a summit.

What's included in the price?

The price covers two nights at a hotel in Moshi (before and after the climb), all park fees, hut fees and rescue fees, a certified English-speaking guide with the required number of porters and a cook, all meals on the mountain, and safety equipment including a pulse oximeter and emergency oxygen. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, tips for the mountain crew and any optional add-ons such as the Meru acclimatization climb are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What should I pack for the Marangu Route climb?

Layering is essential: a moisture-wicking base layer, a fleece or down mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell for both jacket and trousers. A sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C (huts are unheated), sturdy worn-in hiking boots, gaiters, trekking poles, a headtorch with spare batteries, and sun protection for high-UV alpine conditions are all important. We provide a detailed packing list after booking, and basic gear rental is available in Moshi if you're missing anything.

Is the Marangu Route suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers?

Yes, it's one of the most accessible routes for first-timers thanks to the hut accommodation and relatively gentle daily distances on Days 2 and 3. That said, altitude affects everyone differently regardless of experience, and the summit night is demanding no matter which route you take. First-timers concerned about acclimatization sometimes pair this climb with our 4-Day Mount Meru Climb beforehand, which gives the body a head start adjusting to altitude.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylactics are recommended for your time at lower altitudes around Moshi. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and medical evacuation is required for all climbers, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What happens if I get altitude sickness or need to be evacuated on the mountain?

Your guide carries a pulse oximeter and checks oxygen saturation levels at each camp, along with emergency oxygen for serious cases. Mild altitude symptoms are managed with rest, hydration and, if needed, a controlled descent to a lower camp. For serious cases, porters and guides are trained in stretcher evacuation to the nearest gate, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service for air evacuation as part of your booking on request.
