8-Day Tanzania Wildlife & Cultural Safari - Serengeti & Eyasi

Overview

This 8-day Tanzania safari combines some of the country's finest wildlife parks with two of East Africa's most distinctive cultural encounters. Beginning at Kilimanjaro International Airport, the route takes you through Tarangire National Park — famous for elephant herds and giant baobab trees — then into the legendary Serengeti National Park for two full days of game drives. Following a full-day descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, you spend a day at Lake Eyasi with the indigenous Hadzabe hunter-gatherers and the Datoga pastoralists, before a final game drive in Lake Manyara National Park with a Maasai community visit on the return to Arusha.

The itinerary is equally well suited to first-time visitors and returning travellers looking to add cultural depth to a classic northern circuit. For a shorter wildlife-focused option, see our 6-day and 7-day Serengeti itineraries. For a longer journey that extends into Kenya, explore our Kenya and Tanzania safari packages.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) you are collected by your driver-guide and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Covering approximately 2,600 square kilometres, Tarangire is celebrated for its dense elephant population — home to around 2,500 individuals — and its iconic giant baobab trees. The Tarangire River is the only permanent water source in the park and draws extraordinary concentrations of wildlife during the dry season. Elephants, lions, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, warthogs, and an impressive 550-plus bird species are all regularly encountered. Tarangire is also one of the few places in Tanzania where oryx and gerenuk can be seen.

Activity: Full-day game drives in Tarangire with picnic lunch

Accommodation: Lodge or camp near Karatu

Meals: Dinner and Overnight

Day 3

Karatu to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast you drive to the Serengeti National Park, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands. You reach the Serengeti gate around midday and enjoy a packed lunch at the entrance before beginning your afternoon game drive. The central Serengeti — known as the Seronera area — offers reliable year-round wildlife viewing, with lions, leopards, cheetahs, and large herds of elephant and plains game all regularly encountered.

A full day exploring the Serengeti at leisure. Morning drives focus on the watering holes and hippo pools of the Seronera area, where predators are often found in the early hours. At midday you enjoy a bush picnic on the open plains before continuing afternoon game drives through one of the world's greatest concentrations of grazing animals.

Distance: Game drives within Serengeti National Park

Day 5

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

After breakfast you begin with a morning game drive in the Serengeti before travelling to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area via Olduvai Gorge, one of the world's most significant paleoanthropological sites. You arrive at the crater rim in the late afternoon, in time for dinner and an early night before tomorrow's crater descent.

Ngorongoro Crater and Karatu

After breakfast you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive. The crater floor is home to one of the highest densities of wildlife in Africa and offers excellent chances to encounter lions — including the famous black-maned males — the rare black rhino, elephants, buffalo, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and a wide variety of antelope and waterbirds including flamingos. In the late afternoon you ascend back to the rim and drive to Karatu for the evening.

Distance: Within the crater, approximately 20 km across; Karatu is around 20 km from the crater rim

Activity: Full-day crater game drive with picnic lunch

Day 7

Lake Eyasi Cultural Experience

After breakfast your guide drives you to Lake Eyasi for a cultural encounter with the Hadzabe, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer communities in East Africa. Accompanied by a local Hadzabe guide, you walk into the bush to witness and take part in traditional hunting practices. You also visit the Datoga, semi-nomadic pastoralists and skilled blacksmiths who forge knives and arrowheads that they trade with the Hadzabe. The shores of Lake Eyasi are also a birding highlight, with colourful species found along the water's edge.

Distance: Approximately 60 km from Karatu to Lake Eyasi

Activity: Guided cultural walk with the Hadzabe; Datoga community visit

Accommodation: Lodge or camp near Karatu

Following the game drive, you visit a Maasai community for a cultural introduction before driving back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tour suitable for first-time safari visitors?

Yes. The itinerary covers the key northern circuit parks and includes clear cultural highlights, making it an excellent introduction to Tanzania safari travel. Your driver-guide will orient you throughout.

What is the best time of year for this safari?

The northern circuit parks are productive year-round. The dry season (June to October) is generally best for wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around water sources and the vegetation is lower. The wet season (November to May) brings lush green scenery, excellent birding, and calving herds in the Serengeti southern plains (January to March).

What wildlife can I expect?

Tarangire is outstanding for elephants and baobab scenery. The Serengeti offers the Big Five, cheetah, and large herds of plains game. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in Africa to see the rare black rhino. Lake Manyara is famous for tree-climbing lions, flamingos, and diverse birdlife.

What does the price include?

Accommodation, meals as specified, all park entrance fees, game drives in a 4x4 vehicle with pop-up roof, a professional English-speaking driver-guide, airport transfers, and mineral water during game drives. International flights and visa fees are not included.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes. The cultural experiences at Lake Eyasi and the Maasai village are engaging for older children, and all game drives are family-friendly. We recommend discussing your family composition at booking so we can advise on any adjustments.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes. Nights in specific parks can be added or adjusted, and the tour can be extended with Zanzibar, a Kilimanjaro climb, or further parks. Contact us to discuss your preferences.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa for Tanzania, available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Yellow fever vaccination documentation may be required depending on your country of origin. Consult a travel health clinic well in advance.

What happens if road or weather conditions change?

Your driver-guide monitors conditions throughout the trip and will adjust routes if needed. The northern circuit parks are accessible year-round, though some tracks may be affected by heavy rain during the long rains (March to May).
