8-Day Serengeti Migration Safari - Mara River Crossing

Overview

The Mara River crossings are the single most dramatic moment of the Great Migration: hundreds or thousands of wildebeest and zebra plunging into the river together, with crocodiles waiting below and predators stalking the banks. This 8-day safari is built around that event, with three nights based in northern Serengeti near the Mara River, the area where the herds typically cross between roughly July and October each year, alongside Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara.

Migration timing varies year to year and no operator, anywhere, can guarantee you'll witness an actual crossing on a specific day, the herds move on their own schedule and crossings can happen at any time, sometimes several times a day, sometimes not for days. What we can guarantee is positioning, three full nights in the area where crossings are most likely during this window, with a guide who tracks recent activity daily and adjusts the day's plan accordingly. If you're traveling outside the July to October window, our 7-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the same core parks with a route built for year-round game viewing rather than a specific migration event.

Tour Highlights

  • Three full nights based in northern Serengeti near the Mara River, dedicated to migration crossing viewing
  • Best timed for July to October, when the migration is typically in the northern Serengeti
  • Tarangire's large elephant herds and ancient baobab woodlands
  • A full day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, with strong black rhino sighting chances
  • Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions and groundwater forest on the final day
  • Private 4x4 safari vehicle and English-speaking guide who tracks migration movements daily

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha / Moshi to Tarangire National Park

Morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for the drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and a high concentration of wildlife along the Tarangire River. You'll enjoy a full game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue in the afternoon to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approx. 120 km from Arusha, full day including game drive

Activity: Full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Karatu area

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

Karatu to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, you drive west through the Ngorongoro Highlands and descend onto the Serengeti plains via Naabi Hill Gate. You'll spend the afternoon on a game drive through the central Serengeti (Seronera area), known for its resident lion prides and high leopard density, before arriving at your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approx. 200 km, 4-5 hours driving plus afternoon game drive

Activity: En-route game drive into central Serengeti

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in central Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Central Serengeti to the Northern Serengeti

After an early game drive around Seronera, you drive north toward the Mara River area, passing through the Lobo and Mbuzi Mawe regions, both known for excellent resident wildlife outside of migration season. The landscape opens into rolling hills as you approach the river. You arrive at your camp in the northern Serengeti in the afternoon, in good position for the next two days of river-crossing watches.

Distance: Approx. 100-120 km, half-day drive with game viewing along the way

Activity: Drive north via Lobo and Mbuzi Mawe, game viewing en route

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in northern Serengeti, near the Mara River

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Full Day at the Mara River

A full day positioned along the Mara River, watching for herds gathering on the riverbanks. When a crossing happens, it's one of the most intense wildlife spectacles in Africa: wildebeest and zebra plunging into the water in their thousands, Nile crocodiles waiting in the current, and lions, leopards and hyenas working the chaos on both banks. Between crossings, the northern Serengeti itself is excellent game-viewing territory, with good chances of elephant, giraffe, topi and eland alongside the predators that follow the herds.

Distance: Game drives along the river, distances vary by herd movements

Activity: Full-day river-crossing watch and game drive along the Mara River

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in northern Serengeti, near the Mara River (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5

Second Full Day at the Mara River

A second full day in the same area, since crossings don't follow a schedule, an extra day meaningfully improves your chances of witnessing one, or of seeing a different stretch of river if the herds have moved overnight. Your guide stays in contact with other guides in the area to track where the herds are gathering. Even without a crossing, this is some of the least-visited and most rewarding game-viewing territory in the Serengeti.

Distance: Game drives along the river, distances vary by herd movements

Activity: Second full-day river-crossing watch and game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in northern Serengeti, near the Mara River (third night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6

Northern Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Highlands

After a final morning game drive, you begin the long drive south, retracing the route via Lobo, Mbuzi Mawe and the central Serengeti with a picnic lunch and game viewing along the way, lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant and giraffe are all possible on this stretch. You exit the park at Naabi Hill and continue into the Ngorongoro Highlands, arriving at a lodge near the crater rim in the evening.

Distance: Approx. 250-280 km, full day driving with game viewing en route

Activity: Long drive south through central Serengeti with game viewing, on to Ngorongoro

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp near the Ngorongoro crater rim

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 7

Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive

After an early breakfast, you descend over 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site sheltering close to 30,000 animals within its enclosed walls, including the Big Five. Zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, warthog, hippo, flamingo and one of Tanzania's most reliable black rhino populations are all found on the crater floor, with the changing light on the crater walls adding to the spectacle. After a picnic lunch, you ascend the rim road and return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Crater floor game drive, then return to your lodge

Activity: Full Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp near the Ngorongoro crater rim (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 8

Lake Manyara National Park – End of Safari

After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara National Park, a narrow strip of park squeezed between the Manyara escarpment and the lake shore, known for its lush groundwater forest, large troops of baboons, flamingos, and the tree-climbing lions that rest in the branches of acacia and sausage trees during the heat of the day. After a game drive through the park, you exit in the afternoon and continue to Arusha or Moshi, or transfer to the airport as arranged.

Distance: Approx. 1.5-2 hours from Karatu to Lake Manyara, then 1.5-2 hours back to Arusha

Activity: Game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, then return to Arusha/Moshi

Accommodation: N/A, end of safari

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Frequently asked questions

When exactly should I book this for the river crossing?

The migration is generally in the northern Serengeti and crossing the Mara River between roughly July and October, with August and September typically the most active months, though the herds move on their own timeline and can vary by several weeks year to year depending on rainfall patterns. We recommend booking for late July through September for the best balance of crossing likelihood and reasonable crowds. No operator can guarantee a crossing on a specific day, but three full nights in the area gives you the best realistic chance.

What if the migration isn't in the northern Serengeti when I travel?

Our guides track herd movements daily through a network of contacts across the ecosystem, and if the migration has moved, for example back toward the central or eastern Serengeti, we'll adjust the Days 3 to 5 routing to follow it rather than sitting in an empty area. This is one of the advantages of a private, locally-based operator over a fixed group itinerary. If you're booking well outside the typical July to October window, we'd likely suggest our 7-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari instead, which isn't built around chasing a specific event.

How fit do I need to be for this 8-day safari?

This is a vehicle-based safari, no fitness threshold applies and no walking is required. Game drives are conducted from a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof. Days 3 and 6 involve longer drives (around half a day and a full day respectively) as you move between central and northern Serengeti. Travellers with limited mobility are accommodated, let us know in advance and we'll select lodges with step-free access.

What's included in the price?

The price covers a private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide, all park entry and conservation fees (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area including the Crater service fee, and Lake Manyara), full-board accommodation as listed for all 8 days including three nights in northern Serengeti near the Mara River, and drinking water throughout. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What else might we see at the Mara River besides a crossing?

Even without a crossing, the northern Serengeti is excellent, lower-traffic game-viewing territory. Expect elephant, giraffe, topi, eland and large herds of resident zebra and wildebeest, with lion and the chance of leopard along the riverine woodland. Nile crocodiles are visible in the river itself year-round. The drama of a crossing, herds plunging into the water with crocodiles and predators converging, is the highlight if it happens, but the surrounding wildlife and scenery make this a rewarding two days regardless.

Is this safari suitable for families with children?

Yes, this itinerary accepts children of 5 years and older, with children under 12 receiving a discount on park fees per TANAPA policy. The longer drives on Days 3 and 6 are the main consideration for younger children, bring snacks, books and entertainment for those stretches. Let us know ages in advance so we can select family-friendly lodges and discuss pacing.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylactics are recommended. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is required for all safari participants, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. The northern Serengeti is remote, so all vehicles on this itinerary carry a satellite phone for emergencies, and lodges in the area have radio contact with our operations base and with each other. If a vehicle has an issue, we coordinate with lodge staff and other operators in the area for assistance. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from the northern Serengeti and all other parks on this itinerary, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
