8-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari - Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Eyasi

Overview

This 8-day lodge safari takes our 7-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari, three nights in the Serengeti, a full day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, and Tarangire for its elephant herds, and adds a genuinely different day: a morning with the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in East Africa, at Lake Eyasi. Rather than simply adding more wildlife viewing, this extra day gives a cultural counterpoint to seven days of game drives before the route continues to Lake Manyara on the final day.

The Lake Eyasi visit is a real cultural exchange rather than a staged performance: you join a Hadzabe group for part of a morning hunt or foraging walk, with your guide translating, and can add an optional stop at a Datoga blacksmith homestead nearby. For travelers who would rather spend that extra day on wildlife instead, our 7-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers the same parks without the cultural day.

Tour Highlights

  • Three full nights inside the Serengeti, with extra range to follow recent wildlife movements
  • Tarangire's large elephant herds and ancient baobab woodlands
  • A full, unhurried day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, with strong black rhino sighting chances
  • A genuine cultural morning with the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers at Lake Eyasi
  • A separate dedicated day at Lake Manyara for tree-climbing lions, flamingos and groundwater forest
  • Full-board lodge or tented camp accommodation for all 8 days, private 4x4 throughout

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha / Moshi to Tarangire National Park

Morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for the drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and a high concentration of wildlife along the Tarangire River. You'll enjoy a full game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue in the afternoon to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approx. 120 km from Arusha, full day including game drive

Activity: Full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Karatu area

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

Karatu to the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Highlands

After breakfast, you drive west through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pausing at the crater rim viewpoint for your first sight of the caldera floor, then descend onto the Serengeti plains via Naabi Hill Gate. The drive itself is part of the game viewing, with giraffe and zebra often visible along the access road. You'll reach the Seronera area by mid-afternoon for your first Serengeti game drive before dinner and overnight inside the park.

Distance: Approx. 200 km, 4-5 hours driving plus afternoon game drive

Activity: En-route game drive, then afternoon Seronera game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp inside the Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Full Day in the Serengeti

A full day dedicated to game drives in the Serengeti, with a picnic lunch out on the plains. The Seronera Valley has the highest leopard density in East Africa and a resident lion population that your guide tracks daily, alongside elephant, buffalo, giraffe and (seasonally) the wildebeest migration. Morning and afternoon drives explore different parts of the central Serengeti, with your guide adjusting the route based on recent sightings.

Distance: Game drives within the park, distances vary by wildlife sightings

Activity: Full-day game drive in the central Serengeti

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp inside the Serengeti (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Full Day in the Serengeti

A second full day in the Serengeti, giving your guide room to range further from Seronera into the western or northern parts of the park depending on the season and recent wildlife movements. An early start catches predators returning from overnight hunts, with a relaxed afternoon drive to follow. This extra day is the single change that most improves your chances of strong predator sightings on the Northern Circuit.

Distance: Game drives within the park, distances vary by wildlife sightings

Activity: Full-day game drive in the central Serengeti

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp inside the Serengeti (third night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5

Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Highlands

An early morning game drive, the best window for predator activity as lions return from overnight hunts, before you exit the park at Naabi Hill and retrace the route through the highlands toward Ngorongoro. You'll stop at Olduvai Gorge, one of the world's most important prehistoric sites and a key location in the discovery of early human fossils, where a small site museum explains the finds. You arrive at a lodge in the Karatu area or near the crater rim in the afternoon, with time to relax before dinner ahead of the next morning's crater descent.

Distance: Approx. 200 km, 4-5 hours driving including morning game drive

Activity: Morning Serengeti game drive, then drive to the Ngorongoro Highlands via Olduvai Gorge

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Karatu / near the crater rim

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive

After an early breakfast, you descend over 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best wildlife-viewing areas in Africa. The crater floor hosts lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo, with flamingos around the soda lake and one of the highest chances in Tanzania of spotting the endangered black rhino. After a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, you ascend the rim road and return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Crater floor game drive, then return to your lodge

Activity: Full Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Karatu / near the crater rim (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7

Lake Eyasi – Hadzabe Cultural Day

After breakfast, you drive down from the highlands to Lake Eyasi, a soda lake at the base of the Eyasi escarpment and home to the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in East Africa, who still speak a click language and hunt with bow and arrow. You'll spend the morning with a local Hadzabe group, joining a short hunt or foraging walk depending on what the group is doing that day, followed by an optional visit to a Datoga blacksmith homestead nearby. This is a genuine cultural exchange rather than a staged show, and your guide acts as translator throughout. In the afternoon you continue to your lodge near Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approx. 1-1.5 hours each way from Karatu

Activity: Morning with a Hadzabe hunter-gatherer community, optional Datoga homestead visit

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Karatu area

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 8

Lake Manyara National Park – End of Safari

After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara National Park, a narrow strip of park squeezed between the Manyara escarpment and the lake shore, known for its lush groundwater forest, large troops of baboons, flamingos, and the tree-climbing lions that rest in the branches of acacia and sausage trees during the heat of the day. After a game drive through the park, you exit in the afternoon and continue to Arusha or Moshi, or transfer to the airport as arranged.

Distance: Approx. 1.5-2 hours from Karatu to Lake Manyara, then 1.5-2 hours back to Arusha

Activity: Game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, then return to Arusha/Moshi

Accommodation: N/A, end of safari

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 8-day safari?

This is a vehicle-based safari, no fitness threshold applies. Game drives are conducted from a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof. The Lake Eyasi day (Day 7) involves a walk of up to an hour or so over uneven ground with the Hadzabe group, at a gentle pace set by your hosts, this is the only part of the itinerary with any walking. Travellers with limited mobility are accommodated, let us know in advance and we'll discuss what's realistic for the Eyasi morning and select lodges with step-free access for the rest of the trip.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

June to October is the dry season, with animals concentrated at water sources and the highest sighting reliability of the year. January and February is the southern Serengeti calving season, with enormous predator concentrations and significantly fewer tourists. The long rains in April and May offer the lowest rates of the year but can affect road conditions around Lake Manyara and Lake Eyasi. The Hadzabe visit and Ngorongoro Crater are productive year-round.

What animals will we likely see?

Across the wildlife portions of this itinerary you are highly likely to see lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, baboon and a wide range of antelope and birdlife. Black rhino is likely on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. Leopard is possible, the Serengeti has the highest leopard density in East Africa, and three full days there meaningfully improves your odds, but leopards remain solitary and elusive. Cheetah is likely on the Serengeti plains, and Lake Manyara adds a chance of tree-climbing lions and flamingos.

What's included in the price?

The price covers a private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide, all park entry and conservation fees (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area including the Crater service fee, and Lake Manyara), the Hadzabe community visit fee at Lake Eyasi, full-board accommodation as listed for all 8 days, and drinking water throughout. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What is the Hadzabe visit actually like, and is it respectful?

The Hadzabe are one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in East Africa, with a distinct click language and a way of life that has changed relatively little over generations. The visit is arranged through community fee agreements, so your visit directly benefits the group hosting you, rather than being a roadside performance. You'll join part of an actual morning activity, often a hunt or a foraging walk, with your guide translating. What you see depends on what the group is genuinely doing that day, there's no script.

How does this compare to the 7-day version?

The 7-day version covers Tarangire, three nights in the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, the same wildlife core as this itinerary. This 8-day version inserts the Lake Eyasi cultural day between the crater and Lake Manyara, giving a change of pace after several consecutive days of game drives. If you'd rather have an extra wildlife day instead, for example a fourth night in the Serengeti, let us know and we can build a custom variant.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylactics are recommended. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is required for all safari participants, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base dispatches a replacement. If a guide falls ill, we have a replacement available from our team in the same region. All vehicles carry a satellite phone for emergencies, and lodges have radio contact with the operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from any of the parks on this itinerary, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
