Lake Manyara National Park Day Trip from Arusha

Overview

Lake Manyara National Park sits around 1.5 hours west of Arusha, a narrow strip of park squeezed between the Manyara escarpment and the lake itself, near the market town of Mto wa Mbu. The park packs a remarkable range of habitats into a small area, Rift Valley wall, groundwater forest, acacia woodland and open grassland down to the lake shore, and is best known for its tree-climbing lions, a behaviour seen in only a handful of places in Africa. Buffalo, wildebeest, hippo, giraffe, baboon and flamingos along the lake shore round out a strong day of wildlife viewing.

This is a great choice for a first or single-day safari close to Arusha, and pairs naturally with our wider Northern Circuit itineraries for travelers who want more time in the parks. If you'd like to combine Lake Manyara with other parks rather than visiting it alone, see our 3-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari, which adds Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater to a Lake Manyara stop.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park

After an early breakfast, you'll depart Arusha at around 07:30 for the roughly 126-kilometre drive to Lake Manyara National Park. The park's diverse habitats, the Rift Valley wall, groundwater forest, acacia woodland, open grassland and the lake shore itself, are all visited over the course of the day. A picnic lunch is served at the Msasa Picnic Site, which has fine views over the lake, followed by an afternoon game drive in search of the park's wildlife: gazelle, impala, buffalo, wildebeest, hyena, baboon, giraffe, hippo and the tree-climbing lions for which Lake Manyara is best known. With over 350 recorded bird species, including flamingos along the lake shore when water levels are right, this is also a strong birding destination. In the late afternoon you'll begin the drive back to Arusha for drop-off at your hotel.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this day trip?

No fitness requirement applies, this is a vehicle-based game drive in a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof, giving everyone a clear view and space to stand for photographs. No walking is involved beyond getting in and out of the vehicle at the picnic stop.

Are the tree-climbing lions guaranteed?

No sighting can be guaranteed, lions are wild animals and their behaviour varies day to day, but Lake Manyara is one of the few places in Africa where tree-climbing has been documented as a consistent local behaviour, thought to be related to escaping biting insects and the heat at ground level. Your guide will check recent sightings and head toward the areas where the lions have been seen most often.

When is the best time of year to visit Lake Manyara?

The park is good year-round given its varied habitats, but the dry season (June to October) generally offers the most reliable game viewing as wildlife concentrates near permanent water. The wetter months bring lush scenery and strong birding, with flamingo numbers on the lake often higher when water levels are favourable, though access roads can be muddier.

What's included in the price?

The price covers the day trip as described in the itinerary, transportation in a private 4x4 safari vehicle, a professional English-speaking guide, meals as specified (lunch), mineral water, all mentioned activities, and all national park entry fees. Flights, optional activities, alcoholic and soft drinks, visa fees, tips and personal spending money are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Yes, the relatively short drive from Arusha (around 1.5 hours each way) and the variety of scenery and wildlife within a compact park make this an easy, manageable day for families. Birdwatching and the chance of tree-climbing lions tend to hold children's attention well.

How does this compare to visiting Tarangire instead?

Tarangire is known primarily for its large elephant herds and baobab landscape, while Lake Manyara offers more habitat variety in a smaller area and the distinctive tree-climbing lion behaviour, along with stronger birding. Both are roughly similar driving distances from Arusha and make excellent single-day trips; if you have time for both, our multi-day itineraries combine them.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base can dispatch a replacement quickly given Lake Manyara's proximity to Arusha. All vehicles carry a means of emergency communication. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from Lake Manyara, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
