Kendwa Beach

Zanzibar's full-moon party beach — calm water, dramatic sunsets and a pace set by the tide

Kendwa Beach

Quick facts

Wildlife

Kendwa shares the northern tip's marine environment with Nungwi. The reef off Kendwa has good snorkelling with reef fish, including parrotfish, butterflyfish and occasional sea turtle. Spinner dolphin pods are seen on morning boat trips from the Kendwa jetty. Mnemba Island day trips (20 km east) are accessible from Kendwa for the finest reef diving in the archipelago. The beach itself has minimal wildlife but the intertidal zone at Kendwa is cleaner and less developed than many parts of the east coast.

Top activities

Swimming — Kendwa's deep-water beach and minimal tidal variation allow all-day swimming. Kendwa Rocks full-moon beach party — the monthly full-moon party is one of Zanzibar's most celebrated events; an all-night beach party that draws visitors from across the island. Sunset watching from the beach or from the Kendwa Rocks bar deck. Snorkelling off the reef edge from the beach or on a day trip by boat. Mnemba Island diving day trip. Fishing trips with local dhow boats. Stone Town spice tour day excursion. Stand-up paddleboarding along the coast.

About Kendwa Beach

Two kilometres southwest of Nungwi, Kendwa Beach offers the same all-day swimming advantage of the northern tip with a noticeably calmer personality. Where Nungwi has built itself into Zanzibar’s resort hub, Kendwa has stayed smaller, with a single main strip of hotels and guesthouses, a handful of beach bars and a pace determined by the tide rather than the tour schedule.

Kendwa is most famous for the monthly full-moon beach party at Kendwa Rocks — an all-night celebration that has been running for years and draws visitors from across the island. On non-full-moon nights, Kendwa returns to its default setting: a beautiful, quiet beach with extraordinary sunset views across the Zanzibar Channel and the distant smudge of the Tanzanian mainland.

Where is Kendwa?

On the northwestern coast of Zanzibar’s main island, 2 km south of Nungwi and 54 km from Stone Town (approximately 1–1.5 hours by car). The two beaches are connected by a short coastal path; most travellers treat Kendwa and Nungwi as the same destination zone.

All-day swimming

Like Nungwi, Kendwa benefits from its northern tip position — the tidal variation here is significantly smaller than on the east coast, keeping the water deep and accessible throughout the day. No waiting for the tide to return before swimming; no walking across exposed reef flat in flip-flops. This is the primary practical advantage of the northern Zanzibar beaches over the more photographed east coast.

The full-moon party

The Kendwa Rocks full-moon beach party begins at sunset and runs through the night on the beach in front of the hotel. Live music, DJs, fire dancers and the ambient percussion of the Indian Ocean combine with the lunar spectacle overhead. Zanzibar visitors from across the island come for the occasion; accommodation in Kendwa (and nearby Nungwi) fills up around full-moon dates. Check the lunar calendar when planning.

Sunsets

Kendwa faces west — the sunset here is directly over the water, which eliminates the frustrating Zanzibar sunset problem of the sun dropping behind land rather than ocean. The combination of the dhow silhouettes, the channel shimmer and the orange-to-purple sky makes Kendwa’s sunset one of the finest on the East African coast.

Combine Kendwa with…

  • Nungwi Beach — 2 km north; shared beach zone with more activity options.
  • Mnemba Island — day-trip diving from Nungwi or Kendwa.
  • Stone Town — 1.5 hours south for the UNESCO heritage town experience.

Best time to visit Kendwa Beach

June to October — Kusi season (cooler, calm, good value)

The south-east trade wind season keeps Kendwa cool and breezy. The beach is at its most laid-back; European summer visitors arrive in July–August but the beach remains quieter than Nungwi. Good snorkelling conditions with reasonable visibility. Full-moon parties run every month regardless of season.

December to February — Kaskazi season (warmest, most vibrant)

The north-east monsoon delivers warm, calm seas and the most active social scene. The full-moon party in December and January is particularly well-attended. Book accommodation weeks ahead for this period.

April to May — Long rains (avoid)

Most guesthouses reduce operations or close. The sea is rough and the beach is not at its best.

Bottom line: June to October for a relaxed, value-for-money Kendwa stay. December to February for the most vibrant atmosphere. The full-moon party is worth timing for any month.
