Nungwi Beach

Zanzibar's most lively beach — white sand, turtle pools and the island's most spectacular sunsets

Nungwi Beach

Quick facts

Wildlife

Nungwi's natural turtle sanctuary (Mnarani Aquarium) cares for endangered green and hawksbill turtles in a natural tidal pool — the most accessible turtle encounter in Zanzibar. Spinner dolphin pods are commonly seen on the morning boat trips north of the cape. The reef off Nungwi's eastern shore has good snorkelling with reef fish, including lionfish, angelfish and surgeonfish. Mnemba Island reef (day trip, 20 km east) has green turtle, reef shark and manta ray. Humpback whale are sighted offshore June to October.

Top activities

Swimming and beach relaxation — Nungwi's position on the northern tip of the island minimises tidal variation, allowing all-day swimming unlike the tide-dependent east coast beaches. Mnarani Natural Aquarium turtle sanctuary visit — sea turtle feeding in a natural lagoon pool. Sunset dhow cruise off the northern tip — the most popular Zanzibar sunset activity. Snorkelling and diving day trips to Mnemba Island Atoll reef. Dolphin tour north of Nungwi point. Glass-bottom boat trip. Zanzibar spice tour day excursion. Nungwi village cultural walk.

About Nungwi Beach

Nungwi is where most Zanzibar beach holidays happen. Positioned on the island’s northern tip, it is the most developed resort area on Unguja, with the widest range of accommodation from budget hostels to boutique hotels, the most consistent swimming conditions and the most active social scene. For many visitors, Nungwi is simply “the Zanzibar beach” — and that reputation is deserved.

What makes Nungwi particularly practical as a beach base is its minimal tide variation. The east coast of Zanzibar has a dramatic tidal range that can expose the reef flat for hundreds of metres at low tide, making swimming impossible for hours at a time. Nungwi’s northern exposure largely eliminates this problem: the water is deep and accessible throughout the day, which is exactly what most beach holiday travellers want.

Where is Nungwi?

At the northern tip of Zanzibar’s main island (Unguja), 56 km from Stone Town and approximately 1–1.5 hours by car. The road is sealed; airport-to-Nungwi transfers take 1–1.5 hours depending on traffic through Stone Town.

The Mnarani turtle sanctuary

Nungwi’s most distinctive attraction is the Mnarani Natural Aquarium — a natural tidal pool enclosed and managed as a sanctuary for injured and recovering green and hawksbill turtles. The turtles are fed daily (visitors can participate), and while the facility is modest by international marine conservation standards, it represents a genuine community effort to protect the species. The turtles are visible at close range — the most accessible turtle encounter in Zanzibar outside of diving.

Sunset dhow cruise

The traditional wooden dhow departure from the Nungwi jetty at sunset is the defining Zanzibar social experience — the silhouette of a lateen-rigged boat against the orange western sky, with the island behind and the open Indian Ocean ahead. Two-hour cruises include sundowners and typically a short snorkel stop. Book through your hotel or any of the numerous operators on the beach.

Mnemba Island day trips

Nungwi is the closest mainland beach to Mnemba Island (20 km east) — making it one of the best bases for the island’s world-class reef diving. Most dive schools in Nungwi run daily Mnemba trips.

Combine Nungwi with…

  • Kendwa Beach — a 20-minute walk or short boat ride south along the coast.
  • Stone Town — the standard 1–2 night cultural add-on; 1–1.5 hours south.
  • Mnemba Island — day trip diving and snorkelling on the finest reef in the archipelago.
  • Kizimkazi — dolphin snorkelling tour from the southern coast, a day trip from Nungwi.

Frequently asked questions about Nungwi

Is Nungwi or Kendwa better?

They are 2 km apart and effectively the same beach zone. Nungwi is larger, more developed and has more activity options. Kendwa is slightly quieter and is the venue for Zanzibar’s famous full-moon beach parties. Most travellers choosing the northern beach area pick based on specific hotel availability rather than a meaningful difference between the two.

Can you swim at Nungwi at low tide?

Yes — this is one of Nungwi’s primary advantages over the east coast beaches. Tidal variation at the northern tip is minimal, keeping the beach swimmable throughout the day.

Best time to visit Nungwi Beach

June to October — Kusi season (cooler, lively sea, good diving)

The south-east trade wind keeps Nungwi at a refreshing 24–27°C. The sea is lively — Nungwi’s northern exposure means the Kusi wind produces some chop — but swimming is safe and the diving is excellent with good visibility. The beach is busier with European summer visitors in July and August.

December to February — Kaskazi season (warmest, calmest, most popular)

The north-east monsoon brings the calmest seas and the warmest temperatures (28–32°C). The clearest diving and snorkelling conditions of the year. The most expensive and busiest period; book accommodation 3–6 months ahead for December.

March to May — Long rains (heavy, avoid)

Significant rainfall and rough seas. Many smaller guesthouses close. Not recommended for a beach-focused trip.

Bottom line: December to February for the calmest seas and the most vibrant beach atmosphere. June to October for cooler temperatures and better value rates.
