Mnemba Island

Zanzibar's finest reef — green turtles, spinner dolphins and pristine coral off the northeast coast

Mnemba Island

Quick facts

Wildlife

The Mnemba Marine Conservation Area is one of the most biodiverse reef systems in the western Indian Ocean. Green sea turtle rest and feed on the reef, and the island beach is an important nesting site with hatchlings emerging between January and April. Spinner dolphin pods are resident in the surrounding waters and frequently encountered on dives and snorkel trips. Humpback whale pass between June and October. Reef fish diversity is extraordinary — over 300 species documented, including whale shark (seasonal), reef shark, manta ray and large shoals of fusilier and snapper.

Top activities

Scuba diving on the Mnemba Atoll reef — multiple dive sites ranging from shallow coral gardens (8–12m) to deeper reef walls and the fish-rich North Mnemba site. Snorkelling from the reef edge on guided day trips from the northeast Zanzibar coast. Green turtle nesting and hatching observation (November to March/April). Spinner dolphin encounters on morning dive or snorkel trips — pods regularly approach boats in the channel. Big Blue diving in the deeper blue water around the island for pelagic species. Whale watching from the outer reef (June–October). Island stay at the exclusive Mnemba Island Lodge.

About Mnemba Island

Three kilometres off the northeast coast of Zanzibar, a small island encircled by a coral reef system holds the best diving in the entire Zanzibar archipelago — and arguably in the western Indian Ocean. Mnemba Island and the Marine Conservation Area surrounding it are home to over 300 reef fish species, resident green turtle populations, spinner dolphin pods and seasonal humpback whale. The island itself is privately managed as one of East Africa’s most exclusive lodges, but the reef is accessible to day visitors on snorkel and dive trips from the northeast Zanzibar coast.

A technical note worth clarifying: Mnemba is often referred to as “Mnemba Atoll,” which is a misnomer. An atoll is formed when a volcanic island subsides, leaving a coral ring around a lagoon. Mnemba is a conventional island with a surrounding reef — the “atoll” label stuck informally and has been adopted by the diving community for lack of a better shorthand.

Where is Mnemba?

Three kilometres off the tip of the Matemwe coast on Zanzibar’s northeastern shore, approximately 40 km from Stone Town. Day trips to the reef are arranged from Matemwe, Nungwi and Kiwengwa — operators on all three northern beaches run guided snorkel and dive excursions with boat transfers to the reef edge.

The diving

Mnemba’s dive sites range from beginner-friendly shallow reefs to advanced drift dives on the outer wall. Key sites:

  • Aquarium — the most popular beginner site: a shallow coral garden (5–12 m) with extraordinary reef fish density and resident green turtle.
  • North Mnemba — the best site for large pelagic fish: barracuda shoals, reef shark, large snapper and occasional whale shark.
  • East Side — a sloping reef with manta ray cleaning stations in season (November–February) and very high coral cover.
  • Big Blue — open water diving in the deeper channel between the island and the mainland, productive for pelagics and humpback whale encounters (June–September).

Green turtles and hatchlings

Mnemba Island is one of Zanzibar’s most important green sea turtle nesting sites. Females come ashore on the undisturbed beach between November and January to lay eggs; hatchlings emerge from January through April and scramble to the sea. Mnemba Island Lodge’s resident marine biologist monitors all nesting activity; staying guests can witness nesting and hatching under guided, low-impact protocols.

Day trips from the mainland

Non-guests can access the reef on day trips booked through dive shops and tour operators along Zanzibar’s northeast coast. Trips include boat transfer, snorkelling or dive guide, equipment and park fees. The snorkelling on the shallow reef edge is genuinely excellent — no scuba experience required for a rewarding Mnemba visit.

Combine Mnemba with…

  • Nungwi Beach — 20 km northwest; day trip to Mnemba from a Nungwi base.
  • Stone Town — UNESCO heritage town, 40 km west.
  • Kizimkazi — combine reef diving in the north with dolphin snorkelling in the south.

Best time to dive and snorkel at Mnemba Island

October to March — Kaskazi season (best visibility, calmest diving)

The north-east monsoon delivers the finest diving conditions of the year. Visibility regularly exceeds 20–25 metres, seas are calm and the water temperature is warm (27–29°C). Green turtle nesting peaks from November through January, and hatchlings emerge from January through March. This is the most popular period for diving guests at the island lodge.

June to September — Kusi season (humpback whale, good visibility)

The south-east trade wind period produces lively seas (some dive sites become inaccessible on rougher days) but still excellent visibility at sheltered sites. Humpback whale are commonly sighted between July and October. Water temperature is slightly cooler (24–26°C) but still comfortable for diving without a thick wetsuit.

April to May — Long rains (limited diving)

Rough seas and reduced visibility during the long rains. Mnemba Island Lodge typically closes in April and May.

Bottom line: October to March for the finest overall diving. June to September for humpback whale and a quieter experience.
