A morning walk to Ngare Sero Waterfall, a cool volcanic canyon oasis, is followed by rest in preparation for the midnight summit hike. Departure for Ol Doinyo Lengai around midnight or 1am, reaching the crater rim by dawn.

The extra day removes the time pressure on Day 1 and gives genuine recovery time after the strenuous night hike before the 3 to 4 hour drive back. It also allows a proper Ngare Sero Waterfall excursion rather than fitting it in as a rushed stop.
September to January sees peak flamingo numbers at the lake, while June to October offers the driest trails on Ol Doinyo Lengai. April and May are the wettest months and the hike becomes significantly harder on wet volcanic ash.
