3-Day Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking - Volcanoes National Park

Overview

This 3-day Rwanda safari combines two of the Virunga region's most distinctive wildlife experiences in a single itinerary: mountain gorilla trekking and golden monkey trekking, both in Volcanoes National Park. Day 1 includes an optional Kigali city introduction — with the Kigali Genocide Memorial, craft markets, and the Kandt National Museum as possible stops — before the drive to Musanze. Day 2 is dedicated to gorilla trekking, with an optional afternoon visit to the Iby'wacu Cultural Village (Gorilla Guardians Village). Day 3 is the golden monkey trek, followed by the return to Kigali.

For gorilla trekking only, see our 2-day gorilla safari Rwanda. For a broader Rwanda primates itinerary combining Nyungwe with Volcanoes, see our 5-day Rwanda primates safari.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Kigali — Optional City Tour — Transfer to Musanze

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, your guide meets you and provides a briefing. Depending on your arrival time, a Kigali city tour can be arranged, with options including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the Kimironko craft market, and the Kandt National Museum. After lunch in Kigali, the drive to Musanze in the Northern Province takes approximately two hours through Rwanda's rolling green hills. En route, an optional stop at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund — a conservation research facility near Musanze — provides context for the gorilla trekking ahead. Dinner and overnight near Volcanoes National Park.

Distance: Approximately 2 hours from Kigali to Musanze

Activity: Optional Kigali city tour; drive to Musanze; optional Dian Fossey Fund campus visit

Accommodation: Lodge or hotel near Volcanoes National Park, Musanze

Meals: Half Board

Day 2

Mountain Gorilla Trekking — Iby'wacu Cultural Village

After breakfast, transfer to the Rwanda Development Board headquarters at Kinigi by 7:00 AM for the morning briefing on gorilla trekking protocols. Your group is assigned to a specific gorilla family and sets out with an armed ranger escort. Trek duration depends on where the gorillas have ranged overnight — from one to four hours through forest and volcanic slopes. One hour of observation is permitted with the gorilla family at a minimum distance of 7 metres. If the trek concludes in the morning and time permits, an optional afternoon visit to the Iby'wacu Cultural Village — also known as the Gorilla Guardians Village — offers an insight into traditional Rwandan culture and the community's relationship with the gorillas over generations.

Distance: Trekking within Volcanoes National Park; Kinigi to Musanze

Activity: Mountain gorilla trekking; optional afternoon Iby'wacu Cultural Village visit

Accommodation: Lodge or hotel near Volcanoes National Park, Musanze

Meals: Full Board

Day 3

Golden Monkey Trekking — Return to Kigali

After breakfast, transfer again to the park headquarters for the morning briefing, this time for golden monkey trekking. Golden monkeys are an endemic Virunga species found only in the Virunga Massif straddling Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are notably more active and fast-moving than gorillas, foraging through bamboo forest and sometimes venturing into surrounding gardens. Following the trek, lunch at your lodge before the drive back to Kigali for drop-off at your hotel or the airport.

Distance: Trekking within Volcanoes National Park; approximately 2 hours return to Kigali

Activity: Golden monkey trekking; return to Kigali

Accommodation: N/A – return to Kigali

Meals: Half Board

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gorilla and golden monkey trekking?

Mountain gorillas are large, slow-moving primates that rest and forage at ground level; one hour of observation typically involves watching a family group at close range as they eat, play, and socialise. Golden monkeys are smaller, highly active primates that move quickly through bamboo forest; following them requires more agility and the experience is more dynamic. Both treks begin with a briefing at the park headquarters.

Is the Kigali city tour on Day 1 included?

The city tour is optional. If you arrive early enough, your guide can arrange visits to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, craft markets, or the Kandt National Museum before the drive to Musanze. If you prefer to travel directly to Musanze after arrival, that is equally possible.

What is the Iby'wacu Cultural Village?

The Iby'wacu Cultural Village — also known as the Gorilla Guardians Village — is a community enterprise near Volcanoes National Park run by former poachers who now work as gorilla guardians and cultural ambassadors. A visit provides an introduction to traditional Rwandan cultural practices and the community's evolving relationship with the park and its wildlife.

What does the price include?

All park entrance fees and permits for both gorilla and golden monkey trekking, accommodation for 2 nights near Volcanoes National Park, a professional driver-guide and park guides, all meals as specified, all transportation in a 4x4 vehicle, and all government taxes.

Is a visa required for Rwanda?

Most nationalities can enter Rwanda visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival. Check the latest requirements before travel.

How physically demanding is the trekking?

Gorilla trekking involves hiking in forested volcanic terrain that can be steep and muddy; duration ranges from 1 to 4 hours. Golden monkey trekking tends to be shorter and at lower elevations, though following the monkeys through bamboo requires good mobility. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended for both.

Can this be extended to include Nyungwe?

Yes. Adding Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee trekking and a canopy walk creates a comprehensive Rwanda primates safari. See our 5-day Rwanda primates safari for the combined itinerary.

What is the best time to visit?

Gorilla and golden monkey trekking are available year-round. The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) generally offer easier trekking conditions with firmer trails, while the wet season brings lush forest and fewer visitors.
