Frequently asked questions

What is unique about this 7-day Musanze package?

Most Rwanda itineraries pass through Musanze for gorilla trekking and move on. This 7-day package reveals the broader richness of the Musanze area: the Twin Lakes, Rugezi Marshland, Bisoke Volcano, the Nyabingi Heritage Centre, the Mukungwa River, and the Musanze Caves — alongside gorilla trekking. It is ideal for travellers who want to go beyond the standard Rwanda primate circuit.

How demanding is the Bisoke Volcano hike?

The Bisoke hike to the crater rim at 3,711 m takes approximately six to eight hours return, through forest, bamboo, and open alpine terrain. The descent can be steep and slippery. A good level of fitness is required and a porter is strongly recommended. The hike begins with a briefing at the Rwanda Development Board headquarters.

What are the Musanze Caves?

The Musanze Caves are a system of lava tubes formed by ancient volcanic activity. They have been used as shelter during various periods of conflict in Rwanda's history and were the site of a massacre during the 1994 genocide. The visit is conducted as a place of historical significance and solemn remembrance, not as a recreational attraction.

What does the price include?

All park entrance fees and permits (gorilla trekking and Bisoke hike), all activity fees as listed, accommodation for 6 nights in Musanze, a professional driver-guide and activity guides, all meals as specified, all transportation in a 4x4 vehicle, and all government taxes.

Is a visa required for Rwanda?

Most nationalities can enter Rwanda visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival. Check the latest requirements before travel.

Can the activities be customised?

Yes. The order of activities can be adjusted based on park availability and your preferences. Some activities — particularly the gorilla trek and Bisoke hike — require advance booking through the Rwanda Development Board. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

What is the best time to visit?

The adventure activities are available year-round. The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer better conditions for hiking and trekking, with firmer trails and clearer views. The wet season brings lush scenery and fewer visitors.

How is the Nyabingi Heritage Centre significant?

The Nyabingi tradition was an important spiritual and political movement in the Great Lakes region, particularly among the communities of northern Rwanda and southwestern Uganda in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The heritage centre preserves this history and cultural significance for contemporary visitors.
