Frequently asked questions

What primates will I see on this safari?

This itinerary covers three primate experiences: chimpanzees in Nyungwe's ancient rainforest (alongside 12 other primate species including Angola colobus in troops of up to 400), mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park (one of fewer than 1,100 remaining in the wild), and golden monkeys endemic to the Virunga Massif. Together they represent three of Africa's most distinctive primate encounters.

How physically demanding is the trekking?

Nyungwe chimpanzee trekking involves forest trails that can be steep and muddy. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes requires hiking through forested volcanic slopes for 1-4 hours depending on gorilla location. Golden monkey trekking is generally shorter but involves following fast-moving animals through bamboo. A reasonable to good level of fitness is recommended throughout.

What is the Murambi Genocide Memorial?

Murambi is one of Rwanda's most significant genocide memorial sites, preserving the site where over 40,000 people were killed in April 1994. It is approached as a place of solemn remembrance and historical education. As with other memorial sites on this itinerary, the visit is handled with full gravity and respect.

What does the price include?

All park entrance fees and permits for Nyungwe (chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk) and Volcanoes National Park (gorilla and golden monkey trekking), accommodation for 4 nights, a professional driver-guide and park guides, all meals as specified, all transportation in a 4x4 vehicle, and all government taxes.

Is a visa required for Rwanda?

Most nationalities can enter Rwanda visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival. Check the latest requirements before travel.

Can I customise the itinerary?

Yes. Extra nights can be added in Nyungwe or Musanze, and the tour can be extended with an Akagera wildlife safari. Contact us to discuss options.

What is the best time to visit?

Rwanda's primates can be trekked year-round. The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer the best trekking conditions. The wet season brings lush vegetation and fewer visitors.

Can this be combined with Akagera National Park?

Yes. Adding Akagera creates a complete Rwanda wildlife circuit covering primates and the Big Five. Contact us to discuss a combined itinerary.
