3-Day Fly-In Safari - Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Overview

For travelers with only a few days to spare, this fly-in safari trades a long road transfer for a short scenic flight directly into the Serengeti, daily departures are available from Arusha, and the trip can also be arranged to start from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam. Skipping the multi-hour drive means more time actually inside the park, a full day of game driving immediately on arrival, followed by a transfer overland to the Ngorongoro Crater the next day before returning to Arusha.

This package is flexible by design, it can be extended with additional days in the Serengeti or other Northern Circuit parks, and we can arrange your departure flight on Day 3 to continue on to Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), just let us know your preference and we'll build it into your quote. If you'd rather skip the flight and have more days to spend overland, our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari covers Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro by road.

Tour Highlights

  • Fly directly into the Serengeti, skipping the long overland drive, with daily departures from Arusha

  • Optional sunrise game drive for the best predator activity

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Serengeti National Park (Flight)

You'll depart Arusha in the morning for the scenic flight to the Serengeti, with Tanzania's landscape unfolding beneath you. On arrival, your SafariBando driver-guide meets you for a day-long exploration of the park, tracking the vast herds of zebra and wildebeest, scanning acacia trees for leopard, and watching elephant and giraffe graze across the plains. A picnic lunch is enjoyed out on safari before returning to your lodge for the evening.

Distance: Flight from Arusha, then a full day of game driving in the Serengeti

Activity: Flight to the Serengeti, full-day game drive

Accommodation: Lodge inside the Serengeti

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro

An early start for a sunrise game drive, the best window to catch predators in action and watch the Serengeti light up at dawn. After a late breakfast, you'll begin the drive toward Ngorongoro, itself a game drive in its own right, with a good chance of spotting the Big Five or wildebeest herds along the way. Two optional cultural add-ons are available at extra cost: a visit to the Oldupai Gorge Museum, known as the Cradle of Mankind for its significance in the study of human origins, or a Maasai boma visit, with the chance to witness traditional dance and explore an authentic village.

Ngorongoro to Arusha

After breakfast, you'll depart for the Ngorongoro Crater, often called the Eighth Wonder of the World, with your first view from the panoramic rim viewpoint making clear why. Home to over 120 mammal species including the Big Five, the crater floor offers excellent chances of spotting the endangered black rhino and large pods of hippo, alongside lion, leopard, cheetah, jackal and hyena from the comfort of your open-top vehicle. A picnic lunch by the park's famous hippo pool rounds out the morning before the drive back to Arusha.

Frequently asked questions

How does the fly-in flight work?

You'll depart Arusha (or Zanzibar/Dar es Salaam, if starting elsewhere) on a scheduled flight into the Serengeti's airstrip, a short scenic flight that replaces what would otherwise be a multi-hour overland drive. Daily departures are available, so dates are generally flexible.

Can this trip start from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam instead of Arusha?

Yes, this package is built to be flexible on starting point, it can begin from Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam or Arusha. Let us know your preferred starting point when booking and we'll confirm flight availability and pricing accordingly.

Can we extend this beyond 3 days?

Yes, this is a common request, the 3-day structure is designed as a short, high-impact trip for travelers tight on time, but it can be extended with additional days in the Serengeti or other Northern Circuit parks like Tarangire or Lake Manyara. Let us know if you'd like a longer itinerary and we'll quote accordingly.

How fit do I need to be for this safari?

No fitness requirement applies, this is a vehicle-based safari throughout, with the Day 2 transfer to Ngorongoro itself doubling as a game drive. The optional Maasai boma visit involves some walking around the village.

What's included in the price?

The price covers flight tickets between your chosen starting point and the Serengeti, a 3-day, 2-night private safari for 2 persons, all game drives in a modified 4WD Land Cruiser with a photographic roof hatch, a professional local English-speaking driver-guide, 2 nights of full-board accommodation as per the itinerary, all park and concession fees as per the itinerary, and 2 litres of mineral water per person per day during game drives. Other flights, accommodation in Arusha, tips, travel insurance, personal items, and the Tanzania visa fee are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Are the Oldupai Gorge Museum and Maasai boma visits included?

No, both are optional add-ons available at an additional cost on Day 2. Speak with us when booking if you'd like either or both included in your itinerary.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US and Irish passport holders. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for all safari travelers, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service on request.

Is accommodation in the Serengeti guaranteed?

Accommodation in the Serengeti is subject to availability given this is a short-notice, flexible-date package with daily flight departures. We'll confirm your specific lodge once dates are set, booking with reasonable advance notice gives the best chance of securing your preferred option.
