4-Day Ndutu Migration Safari - Serengeti Calving Season & Ngorongoro Crater

Overview

The Ndutu region of the Ndutu Conservation Area and southern Serengeti National Park is one of Tanzania's great seasonal wildlife spectacles. From December through March, over two million wildebeest and zebra return to the short-grass plains of Ndutu to calve, drawing an extraordinary concentration of predators — lions, cheetahs, and leopards — to the area. This 4-day safari focuses on the calving grounds before moving to the central Serengeti and concluding with a full descent into the Ngorongoro Crater.

For a 5-day version with an extra Ndutu day, see our 5-day Ndutu migration safari. For a northern Serengeti migration safari focused on Mara River crossings, see our 6-day north migration safari.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport you are met by your safari guide and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. The evening is free for relaxation. Your guide provides a briefing on the itinerary and what to expect on the Ndutu safari.

Distance: Airport transfer to Arusha hotel

Activity: Transfer and safari briefing

Accommodation: Hotel or lodge in Arusha

Meals: Half Board

Day 2

Arusha to Ndutu — First Calving Season Game Drive

After an early breakfast you depart Arusha and drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands, where the landscape transitions from highland forest to open plains. Upon arrival in the Ndutu region, the first game drive begins across the famous short-grass plains. From December to March, this area hosts the wildebeest calving season — over two million wildebeest and zebra return here annually, and the concentration of newborns draws an exceptional density of predators. Lions, cheetahs, and leopards are among the most reliably encountered in the entire northern circuit during this period.

Distance: Approximately 4 hours from Arusha to Ndutu via Ngorongoro highlands

Activity: Afternoon game drive in the Ndutu area

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Ndutu area

Meals: Full Board

Day 3

Full Day in the Ndutu Area

A full day dedicated to the Ndutu plains. The extended time allows for morning drives when predator activity peaks, midday observation of the calving herds, and afternoon sessions when the light is best for photography. The dynamics of the calving grounds change constantly — a pride of lions on a carcass, a cheetah family teaching young cubs to hunt, a leopard draped in an acacia — and no two drives produce the same sightings. A picnic lunch is served in the field.

Distance: Game drives within the Ndutu Conservation Area

Activity: Full-day game drives with picnic lunch

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Ndutu area

Meals: Full Board

Day 4

Ndutu to Central Serengeti

After breakfast you depart Ndutu and travel into Serengeti National Park. The central Seronera area is home to year-round concentrations of the Big Five and excellent predator activity anchored by the Seronera River. An afternoon game drive gives your first taste of the central Serengeti before dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approximately 2 hours from Ndutu to central Serengeti

Activity: Afternoon game drive in the central Serengeti

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in central Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 5

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater — Return to Arusha

An early morning game drive in the central Serengeti before the drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You descend into the crater for a game drive with a picnic lunch at the hippo pool. The crater supports one of Africa's highest wildlife densities — elephants, lions, buffalo, hippos, and the rare black rhino are all regularly encountered. After the crater drive you return to Arusha.

Distance: Approximately 200 km from Ngorongoro to Arusha

Activity: Morning Serengeti game drive; Ngorongoro Crater game drive; return to Arusha

Accommodation: N/A – return to Arusha

Meals: Half Board

Frequently asked questions

When is the Ndutu calving season?

The wildebeest calving season at Ndutu typically runs from late December through March, peaking in January and February. During this period, thousands of calves are born on the short-grass plains of Ndutu, attracting an exceptional concentration of predators — lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas — to the area.

Is the calving season the only good time to visit Ndutu?

Ndutu is most famous for the December to March calving season, but the area holds resident wildlife year-round and can be visited outside this window. The short-grass plains attract zebra and smaller migration herds at other times, and predators remain active throughout the year.

What wildlife can I expect beyond the migration?

Beyond the wildebeest and zebra herds, Ndutu supports lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, foxes, bat-eared foxes, and a wide variety of birds. The central Serengeti adds elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and hippos. The Ngorongoro Crater offers black rhino, crater lions, and flamingos.

What does the price include?

All park and conservancy fees, crater service fee, full-board accommodation throughout, a professional driver-guide, 4x4 safari vehicle, all game drives as specified, drinking water, and airport transfers. International flights and visa fees are not included.

Is this suitable for first-time visitors to Tanzania?

Yes. The Ndutu calving season is one of the most accessible and dramatic wildlife experiences in Africa. The combination with the central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater gives an excellent introduction to northern Tanzania's wildlife circuit.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes. Extra nights in Ndutu or the Serengeti can be added. Contact us to discuss options.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa, available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Yellow fever documentation may be required. Consult a travel health clinic in advance.

What is the best time for this specific safari?

December to March for the calving season. The peak is typically January and February, when the greatest number of calves are born and predator activity is at its most intense.

How is Ndutu different from the northern Serengeti migration?

Ndutu and the southern Serengeti/Ndutu plains host the calving season (December to March), where wildebeest give birth. The northern Serengeti around the Mara River hosts the dramatic river crossings (July to October) as herds move toward Kenya. Both are part of the same annual migration cycle.
