Quick facts
Wildlife
Saanane hosts impala, rock hyrax, vervet monkey and wildcat. The park is notably the only protected area in Tanzania with a resident population of De Brazza's monkey — a striking Central African species at the eastern extreme of its range, with a distinctive white beard and blue facial patch. Nile monitor lizard is common on the rocky shores. The surrounding lake water draws African fish eagle, malachite kingfisher, pied kingfisher, hammerkop and a range of waders. Nile crocodile are present in the lake margin.

About Saanane Island National Park
When size is not the point, Saanane Island National Park is worth your time. East Africa’s smallest national park — covering just 2.18 square kilometres across three islets in Mwanza Bay on Lake Victoria — was gazetted as Tanzania’s 16th national park in July 2013. It holds the distinction of being the only national park in Tanzania located within a city boundary, making it one of the most accessible wildlife experiences in the country.
The island is reached by a 10-minute boat crossing from Mwanza’s central waterfront. Despite its small size, the park’s ecological position on a rocky granite island in one of Africa’s great lakes creates a distinctive habitat mix: acacia woodland, rocky shores, papyrus margins and open lake water surrounding a compact trail circuit.
The star species: De Brazza’s monkey
Saanane’s wildlife claim to uniqueness is the De Brazza’s monkey — a striking, dignified primate with a white beard, reddish-brown cap and vivid blue facial skin. It is a Central African species, primarily associated with the Congo Basin, and Saanane sits near the eastern edge of its natural range. Tanzania has no other protected area with a resident De Brazza’s population. The colony on the island is small but visible — they are shy but approachable with a patient, quiet walk.
Other wildlife
The island supports impala, rock hyrax (the dassies that sunbathe on every granite outcrop), vervet monkey and the African wildcat. Nile monitor lizards are common along the rocky shore. The lake surrounding the island draws a good waterbird community — African fish eagle, pied and malachite kingfisher, hammerkop, little egret and various waders work the shallows throughout the day.
How to visit
The boat crossing runs from the park authority jetty near Mwanza city centre. Park entry fees and the boat crossing can be arranged at the gate. The island trail is a relaxed 1.5–2 hour circuit; add the boat transfer and you have a half-day excursion from any Mwanza hotel.
Combine Saanane with…
- Mwanza city — Bismarck Rock, fish market and Sukuma Museum on the same Mwanza day.
- Rubondo Island National Park — the full Lake Victoria island park experience.
- Serengeti — via a Mwanza transit day on a western Tanzania circuit.

Best time to visit Saanane Island
Saanane Island is a city park and accessible year-round by a short boat crossing from Mwanza. It is more a half-day urban wildlife experience than a seasonal safari destination.
June to October — Dry season (most comfortable visit)
Dry season visits offer the most reliable lake crossing, the clearest light for bird and wildlife photography, and the most comfortable walking conditions on the island trail.
November to May — Wet season (birdwatching peaks, some rough lake days)
The wet season brings more migratory birds to the lake shore and the island forest. Lake squalls can make the short boat crossing temporarily impractical on the rainiest days, but the island is generally accessible year-round.
Bottom line: Visit whenever you are in Mwanza. Allow 3–4 hours for the island trail and boat return.
