5-Day Samburu and Ol Pejeta Conservancy Safari from Nairobi

Overview

Northern Kenya offers a different safari experience from the southern circuit: Samburu National Reserve holds a set of arid-adapted species found nowhere else in the country, while the nearby Ol Pejeta Conservancy combines a major rhino sanctuary with Kenya's only chimpanzee sanctuary, all within view of Mount Kenya. This 5-day itinerary is built specifically around the north, without the longer drive south to the Mara.

For Samburu and Ol Pejeta as part of a wider circuit, see the existing 7-Day Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Samburu Safari. For the Mara alone, see our 3-Day Maasai Mara Safari.

Tour Highlights

  • The Samburu Special Five: reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich
  • A full day of game drives in Samburu National Reserve along the Ewaso Nyiro River
  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a major black and white rhino sanctuary
  • A visit to Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only one of its kind in Kenya
  • Views of Mount Kenya on the drive between Nakuru-bound and Nairobi-bound legs

Frequently asked questions

What is the Samburu Special Five?

A set of five species largely confined to Kenya's dry north and rarely seen in the Mara or Amboseli: reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, each adapted to the arid, semi-desert conditions of the region.

What is special about Ol Pejeta's rhino sanctuary?

Ol Pejeta holds one of the largest black rhino populations in East Africa and is also home to the last remaining northern white rhinoceros in the world, kept under permanent armed protection within the conservancy following the species' near-total extinction in the wild.

What is Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary?

A sanctuary within Ol Pejeta Conservancy for chimpanzees rescued from captivity or conflict zones, the only facility of its kind in Kenya. The chimpanzees are not native to Kenya, but the sanctuary gives them a secure, naturalistic home.

Why does this itinerary focus only on the north, without the Maasai Mara?

This 5-day window is built to cover the northern circuit properly without the additional days a Mara extension would require. Travellers who want both the north and the Mara should look at our 10-Day Grand Kenya Safari, which covers the full circuit.

What does the price include?

A private safari vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide, all park and conservancy entry fees, the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary visit, roundtrip transfer from Nairobi, 4 nights of lodge accommodation, and all meals as specified from lunch on Day 1 through breakfast on Day 5.

Is this itinerary suitable for travellers who have already done a southern Kenya safari?

Yes, this is a common second-trip itinerary for travellers who have already visited the Mara or Amboseli and want a genuinely different set of species and a quieter, less-visited part of the country.
